The third of four days at the 2019 Canadian Swimming Championships featured Jade Hannah and Cole Pratt each picking up their third victory of the meet, and Summer McIntosh setting a new girls’ 11-12 National Age Group Record in the 400 freestyle.
Hannah, 17, completed a sweep of the female backstroke events, winning the 50 in a time of 28.50, 0.01 slower than she was in the heats. She competes for Island Swimming.
Daphne Danyluk of Neptune Natation won silver in 28.92, just off her best time of 28.89, and 15-year-old Regan Rathwell of the GO Kingfish was third in a PB of 29.15.
The 16-year-old Pratt emerged in a very close final in the men’s 200 IM, closing in 29.02 to erase a 1.74-second deficit at the 150 and win in a time of 2:03.32.
William Marois of Chena slid under his best time by 0.04 to take silver in 2:03.39, and Robert Hill, who opened up that big lead with one length to go with a 34.94 breast split, touched third in 2:03.43.
Pratt, a member of Cascade Swim Club, also won bronze on the night in the men’s 50 back, clocking 26.22 behind Tim Zeng (25.62) of Chena and Guillermo Cruz Zuniga (25.83) of CAMO.
McIntosh, 12, set the NAG record by placing fifth in the women’s 400 freestyle in a time of 4:20.68, lowering her previous mark of 4:22.18 set in June.
Marit Anderson from the University of Calgary Swim Club won in 4:15.79 over McIntosh’s Etobicoke teammate Katrina Bellio (4:16.86). Bellio missed her best time by less than two-tenths.
OTHER EVENTS
- 16-year-olds Bailey Herbert (2:16.06) and Asia Minnes (2:16.40) finished 1-2 in the women’s 200 IM, both achieving lifetime best times.
- Hannah Genich of Toronto Swim Club went 0.05 better than the prelims to win the women’s 100 fly in 59.90, followed by 16-year-old Genevieve Sasseville of the Chatham Y Pool Sharks in 1:00.41.
- Raphael Marcoux of Laval blasted a 53.48 to win the men’s 100 fly, scoring a new personal best. He was the only swimmer in the field to come home under 29 seconds (28.40).
- Marcoux’s teammate Nathan Beaudin-Bolduc used a strong back half to win the men’s 400 free in 3:55.24, negative splitting the race 1:58.30/1:56.94. 16-year-old Alexander Axon hit a new best time in second in 3:56.84.
- Neptune Natation (3:50.24) edged out Edmonton Keyano (3:50.79) to win the women’s 400 free relay, as Raphaelle Dandois-Samson (56.85) held off Emma O’Croinin (55.74) on the anchor leg.
- Laval won the men’s event in 3:23.23 over CAMO (3:23.62), utilizing a strong opening 200 from Raphael (50.46) and Philippe Marcoux (49.96).
