How it Happened:
Rhode Island won seven of Friday night’s 16 individual events, eventually edging La Salle by three points (151-148).

The Rams started the meet strong, earning the first two spots in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Kaitlyn Bansky, Nicole Petta, Caitlyn Blake and Eliza Anderson won the event, while teammates Kristin Johnson, Rebecca Younts, Kelly Blake and Grace Kneller finished just 0.20 seconds behind.

Rhode Island’s senior captains had a strong showing in the meet, earning crucial points for the team. Nicole Petta won two individual events, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM. Eliza Anderson added to the team’s total by winning the 50-yard freestyle. Grace Kneller earned a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.

For the second meet in a row, Rhode Island won the last event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay. Maddie Horner, Grace Kneller, Kelly Blake and Eliza Anderson provided the final winning points for Rhody.

Standouts from the Pool:

  • Sophomore Kelly Blake won the 100-yard butterfly by a margin of 0.04 seconds.
  • Freshman Kaitlyn Bansky earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
  • Junior Alyssa Campone finished second in the 1-meter dive, just ahead of teammate sophomore Cameron Murray
  • Freshman Keely Hemminger and sophomore Cara Megill finished second and third in the 1000-yard freestyle, respectively.

What’s Next:
The Rams will take on the Providence Friars on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the Taylor Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University women’s swimming & diving team won nine events in a dual meet against Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island on Friday.

Freshman Phoebe Shaya continued the stellar beginning to open her collegiate career, earning victories in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Classmates Anne Moser and Sara Rizzetto also impressed, each coming away with multiple wins. The team competition came down to the final event, with Rhode Island narrowly beating the Explorers in the 200 free relay to win the meet, 151-148.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Moser started off the individual events of the meet with a resounding win in the 1,000 free, as she bested URI’s Keely Hemminger by over 13 seconds.
  • Rizzetto followed with victory in the 200 free, touching just over a second in front of second-place Sarah Wyatt.
  • Senior Olivia DiStefano made a three straight with a first-place finish in the 100 back.
  • Junior Emily Wolbert was the fourth different winner for the Explorers, as she swam the 200 fly in 2:08.99.
  • Shaya led a 1-2-3 finish for La Salle in the three-meter dive, which also featured sophomore Julie D’Amore (2nd) and freshman Kaitlyn Smykowski.
  • Later in the meet, Rizzetto won the 200 back, junior Carrie Horan took first in the 200 back and Moser completed the distance double with a win in the 500 free.
  • With the Explorers leading 144-138, the 200 free relay saw the Rams four-person team finish in a time of 1:38.91, beating the La Salle team by 43 hundredths of a second.

The Explorers return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 7 with a meet against Penn at Kirk Pool.
