UMBC Men Break 200 Medley Relay Record In Meet Against Howard

The UMBC men’s 200 medley relay team of Alexander Gliese, Luis Galvan, Philip Adejumo, and Ilia Rattsev set a new pool record with a time of 1:32.32, as the UMBC swimming and diving teams defeated both Howard and Vermont on Saturday afternoon. The men defeated the Bison, 139-113, while the women beat Howard, 139-110, and Vermont, 194-96.

The 200 medley relay team breaks Penn’s record of 1:32.43 set back in 2015. The Retrievers also took second with a time of 1:35.67 with the team of Garrett Wlochowski, Jared Vance, Jack Carlise, and Kyle Paxton, as well as third with a time of 1:39.81 from the team of Jeremy Gates, Connor Ganley, Thomas Shorter, and Jonah Pennington.

In the 400 free relay, the team of Rattsev, Nikola Trajkovic, Gliese and Ganley took first with a time of 3:10.48, while the team of Adejumo, Pennington, Ross Welsh, and Vance came in second with a time of 3:16.00.

Individually, Gliese (1:48.42), Wlochowski (1:52.58), and Jackson Wolter (2:03.22) went 1-2-3 for the Retrievers in the 200 back. Gliese also picked up a first place finish in the 100 back, touching in with a time of 50.87. Wlochowski finished second with a time of 51.94, while Ganley touched in third (54.30), followed by Chance King (55.58).

In the 200 breast, Luis Galvan touched in with a time of 58.84 for a first place finish, while Vance finished second with a time of 59.64; Galvan also picked up first place finishes in the 200 IM (1:56.70) and 100 breast (58.84). Adejumo picked up individual victories in the 100 free (47.23) and 200 free (1:41.95). Nikola Trajkovic finished first in the 1000 free with a time of 9:43.72, while Connor Robison and Jackson Wolter finished behind him in second and third place.

Jack Carlisle took first in the 200 fly (1:53.85) and 100 fly (51.80), while Haythem Abdelkhlaek took first in the 500 free with a time of 4:38.44. Rattsev finished second in the 200 fly (1:55.44), but picked up a first place finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:05.39.

On the boards, Elijah Wright took first in the 1 meter dive with a score of 285.20, while Leo Buoye took first in the 3 meter dive with a score of 283.40.

On the women’s side, the team of Emily Vance, Maddy Popalis, Natalija Marin, and Laura Massicotte started the day with a victory in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.13. Emily Vance, Marin, Hania Moro, and Haylee Committee also picked up awin in the 400 free relay, finishing in a time of 3:33.06.

Moro led the ladies with wins in the 200 free (1:52.33), 500 free (5:02.81), and 1000 free (10:18.30). Marin finished first in the 100 fly (57.68) and 200 fly (2:04.27), while Massicotte took a first place finish in the 200 IM (2:08.92). Popalis finished first in the 100 breast (1:06.58), while Emily Vance took first in both back disciplines. Committe posted a first place win in the 50 free with a time of 24.37.

On the boards, Abby Biddulph took first in the both the 1 and 3 meter dives, posting scores of 220.60 and 227.05, respectively.

The Retrievers will return to the pool on Saturday, January 20 when they host East Carolina and VMI at 2 p.m. The team will also recognize their graduating seniors prior to the meet.
