4x YMCA National Champion Matthew Nutter Commits to SMU

“I chose Southern Methodist University for the outstanding academics and opportunities in the Dallas area, the welcoming, cohesiveness of the team and coaching staff, great location, and rising swim program. I’m excited and eager to be a Mustang and looking forward to the next four years! Go Mustangs!”

Florida freestyler Matthew Nutter verbally committed to swim for Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas next fall. A senior at Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota, Nutter finished sixth in the 200 free (1:40.33) and third in the 100 free (45.80) at the 2016 FHSAA Championship Class 1A State Meet in November.

He swims year-round for Sarasota YMCA Sharks, with whom he competed at 2017 YMCA Short Course Nationals last weekend. There he was a 7-time finalist, scoring individually in the 100 free (9th) and 200 free (4th), and as a member of the Sharks’ winning 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, and 400 medley relays (both the 400 medley and 800 free relays set new YMCA National records). Nutter also anchored SYS’s second-place 200 medley relay.

His top times include:

  • 200 Free – 1:37.69
  • 100 Free – 44.78
  • 50 Free – 21.39
  • 500 Free – 4:34.98

Nutter will suit up for the Mustangs next fall with fellow commits Arthur Cheng and Stephen Cheng.

Just curious, how do some kids commit so late, as in April? Do they still have to apply to all the colleges recruiting them by January 1st, or are they being recruited after January 1st, as I see in many sports kids still take official visits after the January 1st deadline, so does this mean that their applications are submitted to the school recruiting them? International recruit asking here!
