SMU Earns Verbal Commitment from In-State Breaststroker Arthur Cheng

Arthur Cheng, from Corpus Christi, Texas, has made a verbal commitment to swim for Southern Methodist University in the fall.

“I chose SMU because I wanted to be able to set up my life after swimming. At SMU, Coach Sinnott and Coach Dansky share the exact same philosophy; school is first and swimming is second. The campus and business school are both absolutely incredible, and Dallas is such an amazing city with countless opportunities. I also connected with the team immediately and felt right at home. I am incredibly excited to spend the next four years here! Pony up!”

Cheng, who is not related to Stephen Cheng, another verbal commit to SMU’s class of 2021, is homeschooled. He specializes in breast, free, and IM. While his 50/100 free times are from 2016, he is hoping to develop his sprint freestyle even further this season. Cheng explained to SwimSwam, “Two and a half years ago I had mononucleosis and did not swim for three months; I lost weight and a lot of strength and had to pretty much start from scratch.”

Cheng swims for the club team Coastal Bend Allstars. Currently, his best times are:

  • 100 breast 56.95 SCY /1:06.23 LCM
  • 200 breast 2:03.19 SCY/2:25.26 LCM
  • 50 free 21.31 SCY/24.82 LCM
  • 100 free 46.68 SCY/54.16 LCM
  • 200 IM 1:54.92 SCY/ 2:13.63 LCM
