Finland’s Matias Koski broke the Finnish National Record this morning in the men’s 100 free prelims, putting up a time of 47.55 to qualify 9th for the semi-finals tonight. The swim lowered the record by just one one-hundredth of a second, as Ari-Pekka Liukkonen previously held the record at 47.56, done back in 2012 at the Finnish Championships in Helsinki.
Koski was one of six men to qualify for the semi-finals outside of the circle seeded heats, as pre-race favorites Vladimir Morozov and Chad Le Clos both failed to advance. 2016 Olympic silver medalist Pieter Timmers also did not move in, making the event a wide open one.
Tonight in the semis Koski will look to make his second final of the week, as he finished 7th in the 200 freestyle. He broke the Finnish Record in both the prelims and final of that event as well.
Koski represented Finland at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, finishing 21st in the 200 freestyle and 42nd in the 400 free. He is also a former NCAA Champion in the 1650 free, done back in 2015 for the Georgia Bulldogs.
