Rutgers swimming and diving heads to the Bruno Invitational, hosted by Brown, from Friday, Dec. 2 through Sunday, Dec. 4 at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, Rhode Island. The three-day event also features Dartmouth, Princeton and Rider.
KOPRIVOVA NAMED B1G SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Vera Koprivova was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, announced Nov. 23 by the conference. The sophomore had five NCAA B cuts, three first-place finishes and helped the Scarlet Knights secure a pool record in the 400 medley relay Nov. 18-20 during the Frank Elm Invitational. She was the first RU swimmer to win the weekly honor since Joanna Wu captured the title last October.
Koprivova registered three first-place finishes during the three-day Frank Elm Invite, hitting the wall first in the 100 backstroke (53.99), 200 backstroke (1:55.91) and 400 IM (4:18.85). All three results were NCAA B cuts. Koprivova also added NCAA B cuts during preliminary action in the 100 (54.82) and 200 (1:56.95) backstroke.
LAST TIME OUT
Rutgers’ divers competed at the H2Okie Fall Invitational Nov. 17-19 in Christiansburg, Virginia, while the swimmers hosted the Frank Elm Invitational Nov. 18-20 at the RU Aquatics center.
In diving action, junior Addison Walkowiak collected four Zone qualifying scores, including her first-place mark of 303.20 to claim the 1-meter title. The Ballston Spa, New York, native also finished third in the platform dive with a Zone qualifying mark of 241.35 and placed fifth in the 3-meter dive with a score of 279.60 during the highly-competitive event.
Along with Koprivova’s impressive swims, senior Rachel Stoddard and sophomore Francesca Stoppa each produced three NCAA B cuts during the Frank Elm Invite. Stoppa finished first in both the 100 butterfly (54.04) and 200 butterfly (1:58.93), while Stoddard added a first-place time of 1:01.87 in the 100 breaststroke.
Koprivova, Stoddard, Stoppa and rookie Alexandra Fabugais-Inaba combined for an RU Aquatic Center pool record in the 400 medley relay, as the team finished first in the event with a time of 3:40.77. The time shattered the pool record of 3:42.52 set back in 2006.
SCOUTING BROWN
The Bears (3-1) defeated Bryant, 248-52, and MIT, 243-53, in their last time out on Nov 12.
In the pool, Marley Cross had three first-place individual finishes in the 50 freestyle (23.64), the 100 freestyle (50.94) and the 200 freestyle (1:50.97) against Bryant and MIT. Cross also contributed to Brown’s 400 freestyle relay victory with a time of 3:25.77.
Off the boards, Julia Benz captured the 1-meter diving title with a score of 274.70, while Emily Zitkovsky won the 3-meter dive with a mark of 233.40 during the tri-meet.
Brown is led by third-year head coach Kate Kovenock.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
The Big Green (0-2) fell to both Cornell, 188-111, and Harvard, 203-89, on Nov. 12 in Hanover, New Hampshire.
Allison Green was the top performer in diving action for Dartmouth against Cornell and Harvard, as she finished second in the 1-meter dive (274.35) and third in the 3-meter dive (259.30). During the tri-meet, Dartmouth’s Sam Norton placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.65) and third in the 200 IM (2:08.59).
The Big Green are led by first-year head coach James Holder.
SCOUTING PRINCETON
The Tigers (2-1) swept Cornell and Penn on Nov. 19 in Ithaca, New York.
Princeton went one-two-three in 1-meter diving, as Yasmeen Almog won the event with a score of 261.65. Princeton’s Mimi Lin finished second in the 3-meter dive with a mark of 247.20. Off the blocks, Gianna Garcia finished first in the 100 backstroke (55.86) and the 100 butterfly (55.88) while also helping the Tigers secure a win in the 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.
Princeton is led by 33-year head coach Susan Teeter.
SCOUTING RIDER
The Broncs (1-5) lost to La Salle, 174-124, and Delaware, 204-87, on Nov. 12 in Newark, Delaware.
Rookie diver Meg Tomayko placed first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 227.35, and Breanne Hatter finished second in the 3-meter dive at 222.20. Natalie Carter hit the wall second in the 200 freestyle (1:58.91) and the 200 backstroke (2:07.78) to highlight action for Rider against La Salle and Delaware.
The Broncs are led by 16-year head coach Steve Fletcher.
