Madison Potter and Kasey Milstroh Each Win 2 at Minnesota ‘A’ Champs

2016 MINNESOTA ‘A’ STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (GIRLS)

Madison Potter and Kasey Milstroh were two stars of the 2016 Minnesota ‘A’ State Championships, as both girls won two individual titles in Minneapolis over the weekend. Potter, a sophomore at The Blake School, took both the 200 IM and the 100 fly. She was 2:05.28 for the IM win, and posted a 55.40 in the 100 fly, taking both events by over a second. Potter also posted the fastest medley relay anchor leg (23.21) and anchored Blake’s 3rd place 400 free relay in 51.75.

Milstroh, meanwhile, went head-to-head with Hutchinson freshman sprinter Lexi Kucera in both of her races. The senior from Foley, Milstroh, held off Kucera’s final 50 charge to win the 200 free, 1:51.12 to 1:51.25. The two met again in the 100 free, which was even closer– Milstroh touched in 51.02 to Kucera’s 51.06. Milstroh posted a 23.11 split on Foley’s 200 free relay, while Kucera provided a field-best 50.50 to anchor Hutchinson’s title-earning 400 free relay.

It was Visitation, however, that overcame a 200 medley relay DQ in prelims to win the team title in finals. They were fueled by senior Lorelei Gaertner, who touched 2nd in both the 50 free (23.98) and the 100 fly (56.76). Cloquet Esko Carlton sophomore Makayla Suominen won the 50 in 23.46. Meanwhile, Gaertner also provided a 23.63 anchor leg to push Visitation to a 200 free relay title. Maria Mattaini earned a state title in the 500 free (5:01.32), and also placed 4th in the 200 free, earning crucial points for Visitation.

Other winners included Marena Kouba in the 100 back (56.65) and Sophia Nevin in the 100 breast (1:03.67), while Orono snagged the 200 medley relay win (1:46.76) propelled by a 28.99 breaststroke split from sophomore Caroline Gardner.
