EAST LANSING, Michigan – The Michigan State women’s swimming and diving team earned its first victory, 155-145, over Bowling Green at BGSU’s Cooper Pool on Friday, November 11. The Spartans had eight first-place finishers in their standout performance.

“It was a pretty exciting meet, it was nice to get a win, and it was exciting to win by such a tight margin,” said head coach Matt Gianiodis. “I am really proud of the kids. It was a tough environment, and it always is when we come down here. Overall, I thought we did a great job tonight.”

In the 1000-yard freestyle, the second event of the night, junior Haley Kornburger swept the competition with a first-place finish in a time of 10:25.04, defeating the second-place swimmer by more than five seconds.

In a close finish, sophomore Ellie Roche took the 100-yard breaststroke touching the pad at 1:04.56, just ahead of BGSU’s Kristin Filby who finished at 1:04.68. Senior Kennedy Cutler took third in the event with a final time of 1:04.71.

Freshman Natalie Keshemberg kept it rolling for the Spartans, nabbing the third first-place finish of the night in the 200-yard butterfly. Junior Racheal Bukowski also recorded a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, marking a finishing time of 23.45.

Roche grabbed her second event win of the night in the 11th event, the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at the 2:19.76 mark. Kornburger followed up right after in the 500-yard freestyle also picking up her second victory of the night.

“Ellie Roche was definitely our swimmer of the meet. She won both strokes, and she did it in an incredible fashion. Haley Kornburger also won two events, and we are proud of her,” said Gianiodis.

On the swimming side, freshman Iana Wolff finished off the first-place finishes for the Spartans earning her first event win in the Green and White in the 100-yard butterfly.

In the one-meter dive, senior Madeline Sewell finished first with a final score of 298.65, while sophomores Julia Oppedisano and Morgan Wellenzohn took third and fourth place, respectively.
