GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State swimmer Anton Ipsen, Pitt diver Dominic Giordano, Virginia swimmer Leah Smith and North Carolina diver Elissa Dawson are this week’s ACC Swimming and Diving performers of the week.
Ipsen was named ACC Male Swimmer of the Week after helping the No. 3 Wolfpack cruise past No. 17 Wisconsin 224-121. The junior placed first in three of four events, earning NCAA B qualifying times in in the 1650 and 500 free. His 1650 free time of 14:57.48 is currently the number one time in the country. His time in the 500 free (4:23.83) was the fourth-best in the country and 400 IM time of 3:54.79 is fifth-best in the country. Ipsen collected 20 points over the weekend towards NC State’s victory.
Dominic Giordano, who won an ACC and NCAA title last year, is this week’s Men’s Diver of the Week recipient. The senior placed first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter event as Pittsburgh competed against Virginia last Friday. His six-dive total score challenged the 400-point mark in both events, recording 369.38 in the 1-meter and 397.95 in the 3-meter. Giordano’s scores were also well above the 2016-17 NCAA Division I men’s diving standards.
Smith earned this week’s ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Week title after helping No. 6 Virginia to a season-opening win over ACC opponent Pitt, 187-108. The senior set a new Aquatic and Fitness Center record in the 1,000 freestyle in a nation-leading 9:23.79, which is also the third-fastest time in NCAA history and the fastest mark in NCAA dual-meet history. She also won the 500 free in 4:39.25 which is the fourth-fastest time in the country this season and met NCAA Division I women’s swimming standards.
Dawson was named the ACC Women’s Diver of the Week after placing in three events in North Carolina’s dual meet against Tennessee. She placed first in the 3-meter (377.93), second in the 10-meter platform (316.13) and third in the 1-meter (304.95). All marks met NCAA qualifying standards.
