Theodora Giareni has been named by unofficial sources as the Greek swimmer who has already been sent home from the 2016 Rio Olympic Games after failing a doping control test.
Giareni tested positive at a doping control conducted in early July in the Greek capital of Athens and is temporarily in a hotel in Brazil, expelled from the Olympic Village, while she awaits her “B” sample analysis.
Giareni’s positive test was a second decision in 2016; in April, the board of the JIT (Greek authority) decided unanimously that after failing another positive test in December 5, 2015 that Giareni had “no breach” of doping rules.
Giareni is scheduled for her first race on Friday in the preliminary heats of the 50 free. She is seeded 36th in that race with a 25.18 and is a Greek National Record holder in three races: a pair of relays, and the 100 short course meter IM individually.
This sums up all that is wrong with doping in sport. As I said on the previous article, and correctly called it as Giareni (albeit in a cryptic way haha), it was blatantly obvious she was doping as early as 2014 Europeans yet it took until now to catch her. Perfect example of athletes being ahead of the anti-doping agencies for long enough to ruin other athletes’ careers. ‘Most’ swimmers get a few years at the top, if Giareni was a top swimmer, that’s long enough to steal the best years of a clean athletes career.
Just sad.
Dee- whatever there all doping they just know how to hide it. Get a clue, Greeks barely have Athletes in the olympics.
