When Townley Haas swam a 1:30.52 on Wednesday for the fastest 800 free relay split in history, the wheels started turning on the possibility that he could go after Simon Burnett’s legendary flat-start record of 1:31.20.
Little did anyone suspect at that time that Haas would not only demolish Burnett’s record (as just a freshman), but he’d be even faster on his flat start than his relay start, and two days later into the four-day meet. That’s not how swimming is supposed to work.
But Haas managed to do just that, and MySwimPro posted a video of the swim on their Twitter account.
WOW! 1:30.46 200 Freestyle by Townley Haas to win #NCAASwimDive! 😮 pic.twitter.com/gyEPgiUzzt

As reported by Morgan Priestley:
A comparison of the splits:
Simon Burnett (2006, Atlanta): 21.28, 44.44 [23.16], 1:07.53 [23.09], 1:31.20 [23.67]
Townley Haas (2016, Atlanta): 20.90, 43.61 [22.71], 1:06.92 [23.31], 1:30.46 [23.54]
Impressively, that swim was actually under Haas’ record split from Wednesday night when he was completely fresh. Doubly impressive: Haas is just a freshman, and has three more years to dip under the 1:30 barrier.
Anyone got a video of Will Licon’s 200 breast?
You can watch last nights session in full on espn3 replay http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2758694/size/condensed/
I’m not sure if that link will work but if you go to espn3, click on the replay tab and you can find it.
Insane swim.
I would have never thought that antique record would fall this week.
Greatest swim of the meet so far. And one of the greatest ever.
And to think, SwimSwam noted in their 200 free predictions that noone would touch this record, even moreso, they didnt have Haas in their top 8 predictions!
Haas was awesome and it was great to see it live!
‘Watch Townley Haas swim the first 25, the wall into his 100, and finish his 200’
Does ESPN own the rights to all of tonight’s races of will there be a full recap that we can find somewhere like last night’s finals?
Wow!!! Dipped under the :30 barrier!!!
ESPN , always the best coverage in putting the entire race – Those guys rock
