Wisconsin’s Clifton Named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

Wisconsin junior  was named big Ten swimmer of the week following a pair of wins in UW’s dual with Green Bay. Clifton posted a 43.32 to take the 100 free and a 48.13 to win the 100 fly. Also earning weekly honors were the co-freshmen of the week, Wisconsin’s Clark Carter and Iowa’s Will Brenner. Each won the 1-meter event at their respective dual meets. Ohio State’s Colin Zeng rounded out the weekly awards with diver of the week after winning the 1-meter and 3-meter against Wright State.

Swimmer of the Week Cannon Clifton, Wisconsin Jr. – Irving, Texas – Woodlands High School

  • Recorded a trio of first-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (43.32), 100-yard butterfly (48.13) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:20.55), and added a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:28.53) en route to a Wisconsin victory over Green Bay
  • Times in both individual events are NCAA provisional qualifying marks
  • Set a new Wisconsin Natatorium pool record in the 100-yard freestyle, and added a personal-best time in the 100-yard butterfly
  • Earns his first career Swimmer of the Week honor
  • Last Wisconsin Swimmer of the Week: Matt Hutchins (Jan. 13, 2016)

Diver of the Week Colin Zeng, Ohio State So. – Fujian, China

  • Collected a pair of first-place finishes in one-meter diving (430.20) and the three-meter event (483.15) against Wright State
  • Scores in both events are NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks
  • Earns his fifth career Diver of the Week honor
  • Last Ohio State Diver of the Week: Colin Zeng (Feb. 3, 2016)

Co-Freshmen of the Week Will Brenner, Iowa, Ypsilanti, Mich. – Huron

  • Finished first in one-meter diving with a score of 361.00, contributing to an Iowa win over Western Illinois
  • Mark in the one-meter event is an NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark
  • Earns his second career Freshman of the Week honor
  • Last Iowa Freshman of the Week: Will Brenner (Dec. 9, 2015)

Clark Carter, Wisconsin, Omaha, Neb. – Creighton Prep

  • Recorded a first-place finish in the one-meter diving event with a score of 303.38, and added a second-place finish in three-meter diving with a personal-best mark of 356.25 in Wisconsin’s win over Green Bay
  • Marks in both events are NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores
  • Earns his second career Freshman of the Week honor
