Coach Gilbert Legaspi Awarded Gulf Coach Of The Year

Houston, Texas – The annual Gulf Swimming Awards took place on Sunday, September 27, 2015, hosted by Gulf Swimming. This event honors swimmers and coaches who achieved excellence through this past year in the Gulf Coast region of Texas. Giving an inspirational speech about focusing on the journey to achieving our goals and not just the goals themselves and presenting the awards was Olympian and former Gulf Swimmer Cammile Adams.

These next awards were presented to several individuals for their outstanding achievements and service in this past year:

Head Coach of the Year Award– This award is presented annually to the outstanding Head Coach for the past year. The candidates for this award are nominated by the Gulf Swimming coaches and voted on by the head coaches. The winner of this award was Coach Gilbert Legaspi, from the Houston Swim Club. Coach Legaspi has been coaching for the Houston Swim Club for 27 years, starting in 1988. He has lead his team to many elite meets including: Junior National (NCSA) in Indianapolis, Indiana and the National Championships. Two of his swimmers, Kylie Powers and Logan Shiller, attended the most recent Nationals in San Antonio, Texas.

Gulf Age Group Coach of the Year- This was awarded to Jason Devine from Dad’s Club Swim Team. Coach Devine has been coaching for the past 11 years and is in his forth year with Dad’s club. Devine was the head age group coach at Katy Aquatics for five years before joining Dad’s Club. He has experience with every age group and level. He has coached athletes to reaching Gulf, TAGS, Sectionals, and top ten national rank times. Coach Devine has also been selected to coach the All-Star and Zones teams to represent the Gulf.

R.S. Bob Stallings Award- This award is given out to a stand-out official in the Gulf Swimming community. This year it went to Sharyl McCauley from Magnolia Aquatic Club.

Phillips 66 Award – This award recognizes volunteer work and was  presented to Annette Leach.

Pauline Phillips Award- This award recognizes sportsmanship and was presented to Eszter Heins from Huston Swim Club.
