2026 Canadian Swimming Trials: Day 5 Prelims Live Recap

2026 Canadian Swimming Trials

The final day of the 2026 Canadian Swimming Trials is upon us with preliminary heats in the 200 back, 50 fly and 100 breast kicking things off on Thursday morning, along with early heats in the women’s 800 free and the multi-class 150 and 200 IM races for the Para swimmers.

The women’s 100 breaststroke will be marquee race to watch with Sophie Angus riding high after her impressive performance in the 50 breast on Tuesday, while Alexanne Lepage has been on fire this year, recently setting new national records in the SCM 50 and 100 breast.

Blake Tierney and Oliver Dawson headline the men’s 200 back and 100 breast as national record holders, while the women’s 200 back will be missing Kylie Masse, who didn’t even enter that event as the Canadian Record holder but has also scratched the 50 fly this morning.

In Masse’s absence, Madison Kryger is the top seed in the women’s 200 back, while in the 50 fly, it’s Taylor Ruck leading the field with a real shot at breaking the Canadian Record of 25.62 set by Penny Oleksiak in 2017.

The men’s 50 fly features Finlay Knox and Chris Weeks atop the entry lists with Josh Liendo opting out of the meet and Ilya Kharun no longer representing Canada internationally.

Madison Kryger backed up her status as the top seed in the women’s 200 back by dominating the prelim session with the fastest time of the morning by three seconds.

The 18-year-old fired off a time of 2:10.31, splitting 1:04.28/1:06.03, to book Lane 4 for tonight’s final where she’ll be the big favorite to win and book her to the Pan Pacific Championships.

Kryger was within a second of her personal best time of 2:09.53, set in late May at the Mare Nostrum Tour stop in Barcelona.

She got some major international experience last summer, placing 19th in the 200 back at the World Championships before attending the World Juniors, where she won bronze in the 100 back and placed 4th in the 200 back.

Ingrid Wilm, 10 years Kryger’s elder at 28, was the second-fastest Canadian this morning in 2:13.31, comfortably winning the penultimate heat with a near even-split (1:06.64/1:06.67) thanks to a quick 32.56 closing 50.

Wilm, who should be named to the Pan Pac roster by virtue of her runner-up finish in the 50 back, owns a personal best time of 2:10.11, set at the 2025 World Championships.

At the 2025 Canadian Trials, Kryger won the title in 2:09.88, with Wilm (2:10.54) in 2nd.

Sixteen-year-old Reina Liu, who has taken on a very busy schedule in Montreal and has locked in a spot on the Pan Pac roster in the 4×100 free relay, put up a time of 2:13.65 to advance in 3rd. Her best time stands at 2:12.41 set last summer.

American Lexi Stephens was the second-fastest swimmer this morning in 2:11.93, dipping under her personal best of 2:12.02, but as a foreign athlete will be relegated to the ‘B’ final.
