The Italian Swimming Federation has named 48 athletes to their roster for the 2026 European Championships, which will be held in Paris from 10-16 August this summer.
This is the largest Italian team selected for a European Championships held outside Italy, with only the team for the 2022 edition held in Rome being bigger at 56 athletes.
There were two selection opportunities for Italian swimmers to add their names to the roster for the meet. The first was the Italian Championships held in Riccione in April, and the second was the recently concluded Sette Colli in Rome.
Each event winner at the Italian Championships guaranteed themselves a spot on the team, as did the second-place finisher if they swam faster than the European Championships qualifying time. The other swimmers have been selected either based on Sette Colli results, such as Nicolo Martinenghi and Thomas Ceccon who were both injured for the Italian Championships, for relays, or as discretionary picks.
The statement from the Italian Swimming Federation also indicates that Ginevra Taddeucci and Gregorio Paltrinieri could be selected in the 1500 free. They are currently part of the Open Water team but were not included in the 48-person pool swimming squad.
Headlining the squad is 100 backstroke world record holder Thomas Ceccon, who placed 2nd in the event at the 2025 World Championships, 50 breaststroke world champion Simone Cerasuolo, and European record holder and 2025 world silver medalist Simona Quadarella. All three have strong medal hopes, although Ceccon will have to fight through a crowded backstroke field.
Carlos D’Ambrosio could make some noise in the 200 free after placing 6th at the World Championships last summer, and Ludovico Viberti is the third-fastest swimmer in history in the 50 breast.
Sara Curtis, who broke a trio of Italian records in the 50 free, 100 free, and 50 back at the recent Sette Colli, will also be a medal favorite. She owns the fastest 50 back time among European women so far this season
