World Record Holder Cameron McEvoy Does Damage At Aussie Masters

31-year-old Cameron McEvoy of Australia is full of surprises, as the 50m freestyle world record holder recently threw down an impressive split on a relay at the Masters Swimming Australia 50th National Championships.

Taking place at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre pool earlier this week, the short course meters competition featured nearly 800 entries, one of its highest-ever attendances.

McEvoy participated in the event as a member of the Barbarians Masters men’s 4x50m free relay, where the new dad crushed a massive split of 20.33 to help his squad claim gold in a new World Record time of 1:28.22 for the 120-159 age category.

McEvoy teamed up with fellow Olympic veteran David Morgan (22.37), Grayson Bell (21.65) and Pedro Goidanich (23.87) to get the job done.

However, McEvoy also raced the individual 25m freestyle event, where the Sommerville House Aquatics’ ace ripped a time of 9.26 to take the title and register a new lifetime best.

Let’s just all agree that this man is simply unstoppable, carrying on a non-traditional training methodology that is clearly working for the Aussie who is headed for June’s Australian Trials, the meet which will determine the squad for this year’s Pan Pacific Championships and Commonwealth Games.

I love that Aussie masters keep records for the 25s … and I believe they also still keep 400 stroke records.

He had a really interesting interview recently where he discussed him compared to crooks’ world record. He said that based on his best times and splits he’d be right with crooks at the 25, but he loses a whopping 0.7 seconds on the 25-40, so the turn through the second breakout.

He did also say that he’d be interested in seeing what he could do in scy and would spend some time refining that turn, so that would be really scary to see
