He was the only swimmer to crack the 1:00 barrier this morning, with 18-year-old Louis Hoffmann claiming 2nd in 1:00.74. That marked a new best by nearly half a second, with Jan-Malte Grafe, the world junior record holder in the 50 breast, placing 3rd in 1:03.18.
Oliver Klemet was the other international medalist in action this morning, coming in just half a second off his best time in the 200 free. He clocked 1:47.94 this morning, just off the 1:47.47 he swam last May, but enough to take the top seed here by more than two seconds. Nils Nolte was 2nd in 1:50.18, 0.06 seconds under his entry time.
Klemet swam at the Malmstein Swim Open last week, clocking solid times of 7:45.66 in the 800 free and 14:41.71 in the 1500 free at his first taper meet since breaking his arm. He will swim those events this weekend, facing off with fellow German distance specialist Lukas Maertens and Sven Schwarz.
Maya Tobehn dipped under 2:00 for the first time in the women’s 200 free, slicing 0.11 seconds from her best to clock 1:59.96. She claimed lane 4 for the final tonight ahead of top seed Nina Holt, who was nearly three seconds off her best of 1:58.33 in a time of 2:01.07.
Vincent Passek and Ole Braunschweig set the stage for a battle in the men’s 50 back tonight, with the two separated by just 0.03 seconds in the heats. Passek shaved 0.05 seconds off his best to take the top seed in 24.74, with Braunschweig two tenths off his German record of 24.57. That record could be in danger tonight.
Yara Fay Riefstahl dominated the women’s 200 fly in 2:12.43, lowering her previous best of 2:13.12 from this meet last year. She was a medalist on Germany’s 4×100 medley relay at the European Junior Championships last year.
