World Jr Championships Multi-Medalist Carlos D’Ambrosio Downs Ceccon’s SCM 200 Free Record

2026 ITALIAN NATIONAL YOUTH MEET

We’re in the midst of the 2026 Italian National Youth Meet but we saw a senior national record bite the dust as action unfolded tonight from Riccione.

Racing in the final of the boys’ 200m freestyle, 19-year-old Carlos D’Ambrosio fired off a lifetime best and new Italian benchmark of 1:40.69 en route to grabbing gold.

D’Ambrosio handily defeated his competitors, with Alessandro Ragaini settling for silver well over two seconds behind in 1:43.28 and Jacopo Barbotti rounding out the podium in 1:44.39.

D’Ambrosio’s performance laid waste to the former Italian record of 1:41.60, the reigning 100m back world record holder and Olympic champion Thomas Ceccon put on the books at the Toronto stop of last year’s World Aquatics Swimming World Cup.

Entering this competition, D’Ambrosio’s career-swiftest SCM 200 freestyle swim rested at a time of 1:41.61, a mark he produced at this same meet last year to check in as the then-national record holder before Ceccon surpassed him.

Ceccon’s Old ITA Record – 1:41.60 D’Ambrosio’s New ITA Record – 1:40.69
24.08 23.50
49.70 48.83
1:15.86 1:14.52
1:41.60 1:40.69

D’Ambrosio may still be a teenager, but the dynamo helped Italy earn silver in the men’s 4x100m free relay at last year’s World Championships, leading off in a solid 47.78. He also raced at the World Junior Championships last year, where he took home the coveted 100m/200m freestyle double gold, hitting efforts of 47.88 and 1:45.15, respectively; the latter of which remains Italy’s national record in long course meters.

That tracks. 1:30 SCY / 1:40 SCM / 1:45 LCM – clean conversion. Kid is quick. On par with the best in America.

How many percentage of 1:30 SCY swimmers who did a 1:40 SCM?

usa swimming’s rankings only go to the top 25, so their cutoff time is 1:30.81. Comparing that to the scm top 25, and 6 swimmers (24%) appear in both rankings. all 6 are sub-1:41 in scm

Thanks. Just as I thought.

1:30 SCY doesn’t equal to 1:40 SCM in “clean conversion” as the OP claimed.

Does D’ambrosio even swim in SCY?
