In a battle of the titans, Zalan Sarkany and Ahmed Jaouadi were neck-and-neck at the 1,600 mark of the 1,650, but you wouldn’t have known it at the finish. Jaouadi blasted a monster 22.7 final 50 to take the win, breaking his training partner Bobby Finke’s NCAA record by over 2 seconds at 14:10.03. After the race, Jaouadi credited Finke for helping him work on his finishing speed in training.

He already had fast closing speed last year.
I’m not even convinced that last 50 was an “evolution” thing, I just think bro coulda gone faster
“I’m not really good with short course, and I’m even worse with short course yards.”
What does that make every other person who has ever swam this event?

That was the craziest last 50 of a mile I’ve ever seen
The comeback in the 2016 mile was insane though
McFadden’s last 50 split en route to his 1:29.7 split in the 200 was a 23.1.
Puts into perspective how crazy this last 50 of the 1,650 was.
Fast guys will come home in the LCM 200 free in 26 low.
Fast guys in the LCM are usually the same, sometimes a little faster in a 25.
It’s just because you’re close to sprinting a 150 before you try to sprint your 4th 50.
I’d rather not compare and just say 22.7 is significantly faster than the best closers.
Look, the 1,650 is a huge pain in the ass. For anyone to split that fast in the final 50 is just bonkers. Definitely deserving of ice cream with sprinkles.
At least 2 scoops?
and in a cone, no cup BS
