Well, we tried to cover the Texas Showdown live this morning, but Meet Mobile was not updating accurately, so we pivoted to a typical meet recap. We will be back in action for a live recap of this evening’s finals session.

This morning’s session was a preview of what we should see tonight, and the biggest news out of the morning was Polish World’s Medalist Ksawery Masiuk finally making his NCAA debut.

Masiuk originally committed to NC State in July of 2022 to join the Wolfpack in the fall of 2023 before deciding to take an Olympic redshirt year and defer his enrollment until after the 2024 Paris Olympics. In April of 2023, he decided to stay home rather than compete in the NCAA to continue training with his longtime coach.

In September of 2024, Masiuk announced that he would be joining the Texas men’s team for January of 2025. That enrollment was again deferred due to “formalities”, and he arrived on campus earlier this month.

On Friday morning, he took the water for the first time as a Texas Longhorn, racing the 50 butterfly, where he swam 20.91 for 5th place overall. He also swam the 2nd leg on the Texas 200 free relay, splitting 19.28 and the fly leg on the Texas ‘B’ 400 medley relay that finished 2nd splitting 45.73, about five tenths slower than Hubert Kos‘ 45.21 split on the ‘A’.

This was his first ever SCY meet, but there are two more sessions of the Showdown where we should get to see him in action, particularly in the backstroke events, where he is a World Championship medalist.

Hubert Kos made his season debut for the Longhorns after taking the first semester off, racing in the World Cup and at the U.S. Open and breaking two SCM World Records in the 100 and 200 backstroke.

He swam the 50 back, touching in 20.98 to finish 2nd behind Texas teammate Will Modglins 20.75 for the win.

Most of the events this morning were 50s of stroke, which are not NCAA or conference events, along with the 400 IM and the men’s and women’s 200 free relays and 400 medley relays.

Women’s Recap

After the 1st session of the meet, the Texas women hold an eight point lead over Louisville with 257 points to the Cardinals 249 in 2nd. Ohio State sits just 30 points back of Texas in 227 for 3rd.
