14-Year-Old Regan Smith Blasts 1:51.7 200 Back/1:56.5 200 Fly Double

2016 U.S. WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPS – WEST

Riptide Swim Team’s 14-year-old Regan Smith came within tenths of another pair of 13-14 National Age Group Records during night 4 finals at the 2016 U.S. Winter Junior Championships (West). Smith now sits as the 2nd fastest 13-14 swimmer of all time in both events.

She started off the night with a victory in the 200 back, earning her 4th individual gold medal of the meet. In that race, she clocked a 1:51.79, which sits 2nd in her age group to only Missy Franklin, who still holds the NAG Record with her 1:51.07 from 2010.

In tonight’s 200 fly final, she finished just off the podium at 4th overall. This time, she was even closer to the NAG Record with her 1:56.57. With that, she’s a half second off Cassidy Bayer‘s 1:56.01 record from 2013.

200 Fly Splits Comparison:

Swimmer 1st 50 split 2nd 50 split 3rd 50 split 4th 50 split Final time
Cassidy Bayer (2013) 25.92 29.21 30.43 30.45 1:56.01
Regan Smith (2016)  26.16  29.54  30.23  30.64  1:56.57

Smith now heads home with golds from the 200 IM, 100 back, 100 fly, and 200 back. After this weekend, she’s ranked either 1st or 2nd on the top all time 13-14 performers list in 5 different events.

Will Smith/Regan Smith. Interchangeable names in the entertainment industry at this point. Have you you seen him in The Pursuit of Happiness?? Great swims from Regan. Love to see a legend develop. Reminds me of I Am Legen!! Hahah great film. Can she break 1:50? When is his next movie coming out? Stop teasing us Will haha

I didn’t see Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happiness, but he was awesome in The Pursuit of Happyness.

More importantly, Regan Smith kicked his butt in both the 2Back/2Fly and is approaching Missy/Cassidy status.

It was a tough double for Regan Smith. But she did a great job considering she’s better in the 100s so far.
What a meet for the young star. Can’t wait to see her next year in long course. Hopefully first at several Grand Prix meets.

News of Cassidy Bayer? She wasn’t at East junior meet. I don’t see her at NCAP invite either. She took a break after last summer? Looks like she swam only race in October since junior pan pacs.
