10 Signs You Might Be a Swimmer Girl

We love being women and we love our sport! Swimmer Girls are fierce, beautiful and, well, have some interesting habits.  See which of these 10 Swimmer Girl-isms apply to you!

#1 – You eat more than your male friends. This applies to breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks…any time!  Unless your best male friend is also a swimmer or perhaps a lineman on the football team, chances are you’re hoping he picks up the check for what you’re about to stack up on your side of the table at Waffle House after practice.

#2 – Your besties know your nap time is sacred. A swimmer nap is like none other, where you are fully embracing every sheet crinkle, cold part of the pillowcase and just the simple comfort of your body being still.  Mess around with this serene scene of relaxation with an interrupting text or phone call?  Your friends know better.

#3 – You can’t remember the last time you took a shower at home. You step into your aquatic facility’s shower and have instant flashbacks of a clean, pretty, non-public shower stall in which you used to spend quality time bathing yourself with beautiful-smelling products hand-picked by you.  Day in, day out, however, vague memories of soft, fluffy towels and your favorite shampoo are replaced by the reality of cold, cracked tile and generically labeled ‘cleanser’ pumps at the pool’s public showers.

#4 – You spend more time on swimswam.com than doing your homework. Of course this one applies to both men and women alike!  You are a SwimSwam addict, a student of the sport through and through who soaks up training articles, meet results and swim culture news like a sponge.  Plus, you have just got to get the latest “how to” tips on swim rings so you can win your unofficial competition at the end of your next practice.

#5 – Your version of haute couture is a swim parka and Uggs. On-deck, we keep warm and make a fashion statement with our over sized parkas paired with the fuzziest shoes known to humankind and look good while doing it. Swimmer girl is our name, fashion and function is our game.

#6 – You learn a lot in the locker room. Catch up on gossip, get the scoop on tomorrow’s chemistry test, find out who broke up with whom…even, a-hem, Masters swimmers nearby who happen to be getting ready for practice get a preview of what’s happening on the latest episode of Pretty Little Liars in this four-walled girl talk headquarters.

#7 – You rival the Guinness World Record for binge-TV-watching. Another one that could apply to both be-goggled men and women, seasons upon seasons of your faves such as ‘Orange is the New Black’ and ‘Scandal’ are just waiting for you on NetFlix.  Line ‘em up and knock ‘em down when you’re permanently positioned on the couch during taper.  Just remember to blink, keep hydrated, and try to keep track of what day it is so you don’t miss your meet.

#8 – You have debated wearing your racing suit under that slinky black dress. Spanx has nothing on the slimming benefits of a “yes it took me 45 minutes to put this on” technical racing suit.  Any personal body hang-ups are a thing of the past once you squeeze into the seamless fabric and find yourself instantly two sizes smaller.

#9 – The only “up-do” you know is the swimmer bun. French twists, chignons, complex waterfall braids….what swimmer has time for that?  Nope, just give us wet hair, a place to turn our heads upside down and a hair band or bobby pin and we’re in business á la Missy Franklin.

#10 – Your muscles are your badge of honor. ‘Thigh gaps’ and ‘bikini bridges’ aren’t in our vocabulary, but words like ‘strong’, ‘athletic’ and ‘capable’ sure are.  We work hard in the pool and out and deserve the shapes our bodies take on, wearing our muscles loudly and proudly while we swim #likeagirl.
