The 2026 Dutch European Swimming Trials entered its final day of action from Eindhoven, with Sean Niewold downing another national record to conclude his campaign.
Racing in the prelims of the men’s 50m freestyle, 24-year-old Niewold fired off a lifetime best and Dutch standard of 21.56 en route to claiming the top seed.
Niewold registered the sole time of the field under the 22-second barrier, with Kenzo Simons capturing the 2nd seed in 22.17 and Marcel Hofstede of Hong Kong rounding out the top tier of qualifiers in 22.43.
Niewold’s performance sliced .02 off the former Dutch national record of 21.58 Olympian Thom de Boer put on the books at the 2020 Olympic Games.
Entering this competition, Niewold’s lifetime best in the men’s 50m free rested at the 21.66 he produced just this past March at the Pro Swim Series in Westmont. That marked just the 4th occasion on which the Dutchman had been under the 22-second threshold.
Come tonight’s main event, Niewold ultimately wound up with the gold, although he added slightly to his morning outing.
He got to the wall in a still-impressive mark of 21.60 for the top spot, adding this event to the 50m fly national record he already put on the books earlier in the competition.
Simons maintained his runner-up slot in 22.17, as did Hofstede, bagging the bronze in 22.43 this evening.
Niewold now ranks 9th in the world and checks in as the 4th-quickest European swimmer on the season.
