There was a first-time champion at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Boys 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships.
Woodinville made school and state history, collecting its first title by finishing 20 points ahead of runner-up Issaquah despite not winning any events.
Woodinville was led by seniors Henry Geitz and Daniel Major, who each had a 2nd and 3rd-place finish.
Geitz was 2nd in the 500 free in a personal best of 4:34.83, and added a 3rd-place finish in the 200 free (1:42.77).
Major was 2nd in the 100 free (45.71) and 3rd in the 100 back (50.46), setting new best times in both.
The two were also a part of Woodinville’s 400 free relay team that finished 2nd.
Individually, there were three multi-event winners:, Issaquah junior Owen Stauffer, Issaquah senior Aaron Bell and Jackson sophomore Syunta Lee.
Stauffer won the 100 fly in 48.58, and then captured the 100 back in 47.70. He was 4th in the 100 fly and 3rd in the 100 back last year.
Committed to Brown, Bell repeated as champion in both sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 free in 20.05 and the 100 free in 45.01.
Stauffer and Bell were also a part of two winning relay teams for Issaquah.
In the 200 medley relay, Stauffer had a back split of 21.92 and Bell a fly split of 21.17 to help Issaquah win in a time of 1:32.36. Other team members were Jae Chang (28.62) and Henry Holtan (20.65).
The 400 free relay was won by Issaquah’s team of Bell (45.02), Ethan Morse (49.10), Holtan (46.35) and Stauffer (45.50) in 3:05.97.
In addition to Bell, also repeating as champion in two events was Lee, who topped the field once again in the 200 IM (1:45.84) and 500 free (4:23.47).
Other event winners were:
- Stadium senior Jack Andrew, who has committed to Denver, won the 200 free in a time of 1:40.45.
- Eastlake’s Makar Shnitko won the diving event with 417.80 points.
- Kamiak won the 200 free relay in 1:27.25 behind the team of Ryan Jackson (22.22), Kaiden Nguyen (21.60), Jack Fast (21.62) and Lucas Chai (21.81).
- Eastlake senior Justin Brown, a Carnegie Mellon commit, repeated as champion in the 100 breast with a time of 55.15.
