2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

WOMEN’S 100 FREE FINALS

  • 2014 World Champion: Femke Heemskerk (NED), 51.37
  • World Record: Cate Campbell (AUS), 50.91, 2015
  • Championship Record: Femke Heemskerk (NED), 51.37

GOLD: Brittany Elmslie (AUS), 51.81

SILVER: Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED), 51.92

BRONZE: Penny Oleksiak (CAN), 52.01

Canada’s Penny Oleksiak wasn’t able to secure Canada’s first gold of the meet in the 100 free, but she did break her own Canadian Record once again, lowering it to 52.09 en route to a bronze medal. Brittany Elmslie surged through the 2nd half of the race to catch early leader Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED), winning gold for Australia in 51.81.

Elmslie took down Kromowidjojo by just 11 one-hundredths in order to get her hand on the wall first and take home the gold for Australia.

Elmslie has been on plenty of Australia’s freestyle relays during her career where she’s picked up plenty of hardware, but she’s never had an international gold medal performance in an individual race.

Yesterday’s gold medal is only the second individual international medal of Elmslie’s career. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Elmslie picked up a bronze medal in the 50m butterfly to add to the two relay medals she earned at the meet.
