CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Virginia Tech racked up many first-place wins during their meet against Queens and Tennessee. The tech men beat Queens 146-108, and the women won 151-103. Tennessee counted as an exhibition, so they do not have a final score.

“Today we had a pretty good meet. It was our first meet in almost two months, so it’s difficult to know what to expect with only about five days of training. I think we raced very well, both the men and women did a great job. I’m so proud of the team. Now we just need keep training and keep up the hard work for our meet against UVa next week.”
HIGHLIGHTS
Men
The Hokies’ relays didn’t disappoint. To begin the meet, Forest Webb, Cobi Lopez Miro, Youssef Ramadan and Luis Dominguez placed first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:27.96. Finishing off the day, Ramadan, Carles Coll Marti, Will Koeppen and Dominguez placed first in the 200 free relay with a final time of 1:19.83.
Showing his endurance, Luis Dominguez placed first in the men’s 1000 free with a time of 9:22.44. Following right behind him, Nico Garcia Saiz placed second with a time of 9:24.44 and Nikolas Lee-Bishop placed third with a time of 9:34.35. Continuing the top distance swims, Dominguez also placed first in the 500 free with a time of 4:33.70. Keith Myburgh followed right behind, placing second with a time of 4:35.50 and Lee-Bishop placing third with a time of 4:37.51.
Carles Coll Marti showed speed and diversity in the pool. He placed first in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.16 and first in the 200 breast with a time of 1:57.06. Coll Marti also placed first in the men’s 200 IM with a time of 1:48.86.
Youssef Ramadan always proves his speed during freestyle events. Placing first, Ramadan finished the 100 free with a time of 43.71. He finished the 50 free with a time of 19.52, placing second.
Women
Like the men, the women’s relays placed high. Starting the day off strong, Carmen Weiler Sastre, Fanni Gyurinovics, Karisa Franz and Madelyn Moore placed first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.19. Gyurinovics, Franz, Emily Claesson and Anna Summers finished out the meet with a first place win in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.86.
Chase Travis dominated distance events. Placing first in the women’s 1000 free, Travis finished with a time of 10:07.14. She went on to win the women’s 500 free with a time of 4:59.03.
Sarah Shackelford, Emma Atkinson and Madelyn Moore placed high in freestyle. Shackelford finished first in the 50 free with a time of 23.43 and Moore followed right behind in second place with a time of 23.43. Shackelford also won the 100 free, finishing at 50.70 with Moore in second place at 50.85. Atkinson won the 200 free event with a time of 1:49.10.
Weiler Sastre, Emma Atkinson and Caroline Bentz continue to have strong performances in backstroke. Placing first, Weiler Sastre finished the 100 back with a time of 54.69. Right behind her in second place, Bentz finished with a time of 55.08. Atkinson placed first in the 200 back with a final time of 1:57.23. Weiler Sastre fell right behind her in second place with a time of 1:58.82 and Bentz in third at 2:00.07.
Placing first in butterfly, Morgan Miller finished the 200 fly event with a time of 2:02.65. Karisa Franz finished first in the women’s 100 fly with a time of 55.25.
UP NEXT
The Hokies will travel to Charlottesville to compete against Virginia on Jan. 14 in the first Commonwealth Clash of the year.
