Virginia Tech Picks up 2020 Commitment from Spanish Breaststroker Carles Coll

Carles Coll Marti, who comes from Club de Natació Tarraco in the Mediterranean city of Tarragona, Spain, has signed an NLI to swim at Virginia Tech beginning in the fall of 2020. He’ll joing Alex Neff in the class of 2024.

Coll is a breaststroke specialist. He represented Spain at 2019 LEN European Junior Swimming Championships in Kazan and again at FINA Junior World Championships in Budapest. At Euros, he came in 19th in the 50m breast (29.28) and 11th in the 200 breast (2:15.99). He also swam breaststroke on the men’s 400 medley relay (1:04.50) and split 50.66 on the mixed 400 free relay. At World Juniors he came in 29th in heats of the 50 breast (29.16), 28th in the 100 (1:03.33), and 13th in the 200 (2:15.51). His best times in the LCM 50/100 breast come from last December’s Spanish Junior Championships in Sabadell, while his 200 dates from the Junior Championships in April, also in Sabadell.

In SCM, Coll broke the National Records for 18-year-old in the 100 IM (twice – first with a 54.11 in prelims, and then with a 53.61 in finals for the silver medal), the 200 breast (2:08.79), and the 50 free (22.24) at the Spanish Short Course Swimming Championships in Gijón in November.

Coll will have three years to train with current H2Okie freshmen AJ Pouch and Cobi Lopez Miro and two with Keith Myburgh.

We generally don’t include internationals in our rankings because there’s too much uncertainty about when or if they’ll wind up in the NCAA. The exception is if they spend a significant amount of time training in the US in their youth and attend an American high school, like a Vlad Morozov or Taylor Ruck, for example.
