Video Interview: Penny Oleksiak Breaks Down Her Two New Canadian Records

Penny Oleksiak was on fire this weekend, setting two new Canadian age group records in the 13-14 year-old category at the Ontario Junior International held at the new Pan Am pool.

Oleksiak first dropped a 1:57.43 to win the 200m freestyle and break the previous record. She was out in 57.52, coming back in just under a minute splitting a 59.91 on that last 100.

On night two she raced the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke. In the 50 she was setup to break another record, and did dip under the 25.52 mark with a 25.51, however she finished second to Rebecca Smith who set the new record of 25.40. Oleksiak had a quick turn around following the 50 free, placing fifth in the 100m backstroke in 1:00.85.

On the final day of competition Oleksiak raced the 100m freestyle. She powered through and expanded on her speed in the last 10 meters to hold off a charging Rebecca Smith and clock in at 54.59 to break Victoria Chan’s previous record of 54.99. She was out in a 26.46 an back in 28.03.
