The UVM women’s swimming team earned a 165-97 victory over America East rival Binghamton on Saturday afternoon at NJIT in New Jersey to begin the regular season. The divers had their meet against the Bearcats at RPI cancelled.

Kira HancockShannon CowleyVivian Nguyen, and Kelly Lennon opened the meet by winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:00.39. Colleen Driscoll followed by securing second overall in the 1000 freestyle as she clocked in at 11:01.62.

UVM then swept the top three spots in back-to-back events. Lennon (1:56.85), Dani Rocheleau (1:57.92), and Sophia Smith (1:59.29) swept the 200 free, while Jess Gorham (59.56), Hancock (1:00.05), and Morgan Montgomery (1:01.23) went 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke. Montgomery, Rocheleau, and Gorham later went 1-2-3 in a different order in the 200 back.

Shannon Cowley was the champion of both the 100 (1:07.90) and 200 (2:26.92) breaststroke, while Sierra Sexton won the 50 free in 24.75 seconds and placed second in the 100 free in 54.48 with Hancock in third (54.57). Alexy Novelli took second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:13.98 and Nguyen finished second in the 100 fly in 59.94 while competing in her first regular season meet.

Lennon won the 500 free (5:16.34), more than three seconds faster than her teammate Smith (5:19.73). Hancock, Sexton, Nguyen, and Stefi Geiger combined to win the 200 free relay, an event the Catamounts have won at the last two America East Championships, touching the wall in 1:39.38.

UVM returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 14) with a road meet at New Hampshire beginning at 11 a.m.
