USA Swimming Keeps 2022 International Team Trials in April

USA Swimming made a few updates to its domestic swimming calendar on Tuesday following the announcement of the 2022 World Championships earlier in the week.

The national governing body has added a Pro Swim Series event in Westmont, Ill., March 2-5, the same dates as the event that was originally scheduled to be held in Des Moines, Iowa. That meet in Des Moines was canceled last week due to the postponement of the 2022 World Championships, which were moved back to 2023 in Fukuoka, Japan.

FINA then announced Monday that there will be a World Championships this year in Budapest, June 18-July 3, forcing USA Swimming to move quickly and add a new PSS event to give athletes some racing opportunities.

The first Pro Swim Series event scheduled for 2022 in Knoxville, Tenn., was canceled in January due to COVID-19.

The Westmont PSS will serve as a qualifier for USA Swimming’s International Team Trials, which the organization has confirmed will remain in the originally-scheduled April 26-30 timeslot in Greensboro, N.C.

The trials meet, which was initially geared towards selecting the 2022 World Championship team in Fukuoka, will now be used to select the Worlds team for Budapest in addition to the World Junior Championships.

USA Swimming also confirms that the San Antonio Pro Swim will remain in its March 30-April 2 slot, while the Mission Viejo meet, previously slated for June 29-July 2, has been moved up to June 1-4.

Do you think ISL will defer the start of their season to after Worlds? It looks like they lost this round.

Lost? Fina is continuously altering their schedule in an attempt to try and match the ISL’s payouts and availability. Given the longevity of the coming ISL season, they’ve got much more flexibility on moving matches and altering schedules than FINA does. I don’t think anyone has lost just yet.
