UNC beefs up backstrokes with commitment from Lakeside’s Heyward Harrison

The UNC Tar Heels have expanded an area of strength, grabbing a verbal commitment from Lakeside Seahawks backstroker Heyward Harrison.

Harrison competes for Lakeside as well as Kentucky’s high school swimming powerhouse St. Xavier. He won the 200 IM to help St. Xavier win its 50th state title in program history last season.

Harrison’s Top Times

  • 100 back: 50.52
  • 200 back: 1:48.16
  • 200 IM: 1:51.08
  • 100 fly: 50.01

The Tar Heels are very strong in the backstrokes at the moment, scoring five different men at last year’s ACC Championships between the two events. Harrison should have a shot to add to that number immediately, as his lifetime-best 200 back would have just eked out points last year.

He’s also an excellent IMer, and that might make a solid third event for him, based on the NCAA event order.

Harrison announced his decision on Instagram earlier this week:
