Now that all sports have announced their rosters, the U.S. Olympic Team has tallied a total of 292 women on its squad, giving the red, white, and blue the highest number of female athletes to ever compete for a one nation in a single Olympic Games. Prior to this summer, the highest number of female athletes to represent a single nation came in 2008, when China had a record 289 women competing at the Beijing Olympics.
Team USA currently sits on top of the all-time Olympic medal tables as we head into Rio, with a total of 2,399 medals. That number includes 976 gold, 757 silver, and 666 bronze. The U.S. has competed in 26 Olympic Games, giving them an average of 92 medals per Olympiad.
The next highest totals belong to the former Soviet Union and Germany in 2nd and 3rd, respectively, with 1,122 medals in 10 Games for the USSR and 895 medals in 23 Games for Germany. The former USSR still leads the U.S. in average medals per Games, with an average of 112 medals per Olympiad.
