After breaking both the Big Ten conference and meet records earlier in the session in the 100 butterfly, Michigan’s Tyler Ray continued his record breaking performance with a blistering 18.66 leadoff leg for the Wolverine’s 200 free relay. This time, though not in the individual event, marks the fastest ever 50 free in Big 10 history, breaking the conference and program records.
The former conference record was held by Minnesota’s Bowen Becker in 18.69, while the Michigan record had stood since Paul Powers clocked 18.80 in 2017.
This swim marks the first time Ray had ever been under 19 seconds, with his previous career best coming as a relay leadoff in November when he swam 19.02.
The time puts him in 7th in the NCAA this season, and only 8th swimmer this season under 18.7.
Despite this heroic effort, the Wolverines would be bested by eventual winners Indiana in the event by just a tenth of a second. ray was also the fastest Wolverine on the relay out of the leadoff spot, with the next fastest being the anchor leg Jack Wilkening in 18.87, no other swimmer on that relay was under 19 seconds.
