Two-Time MIAA State Champion Kyleigh Barao Signs NLI With LIU Brooklyn

Kyleigh Barao, a senior at New Bedford High School in Massachusetts, signed a National Letter of Intent to swim for Long Island University-Brooklyn in Brooklyn, New York, beginning in the fall of 2017. Barao is a breaststroke/butterfly/IM specialist who swims year-round with the New Bedford YMCA Hurricanes. “I would like to thank my coaches Brett Pacheco and Koby Verran for everything they’ve done for me. I chose LIU Brooklyn for the amazing atmosphere of the campus and team, and I can’t wait to be a blackbird!”

Barao won the MIAA state title in the 100 fly in both 2014 and 2015. At the MIAA Fall State 2014 Division 1 Swimming and Diving Championships she went 59.94 to get the win by .05; she also placed second in the 200 IM (2:09.68) and swam on the New Bedford 200 medley and 200 free relays. The following year she repeated her victory in the 100 fly and her second-place finish in the 200 IM.

In club swimming she competed in the 100m free, 100m fly, and 200m IM at the New England Senior Championships this summer, although all her best LCM times date from 2014. Her top SCY times include:

  • 100 breast: 1:07.31
  • 200 breast: 2:24.25
  • 100 fly: 58.74
  • 200 IM: 2:09.62
