Towson Says It Received No Complaints of Sexual Misconduct By Banned Coach

Towson University says it did not receive any student complaints about sexual misconduct by former head coach Pat Mead that might be the subject of a USA Swimming ban handed to the coach last week.

Mead was banned last week under a section of the USA Swimming Code of Conduct statute that deals with inappropriate sexually-oriented behavior towards an athlete by a coach or authority figure.

Pat Mead’s wife Maureen had previously been banned for life by swimming’s national governing body after she pleaded guilty to charges of visual surveillance and altering evidence in a case where Maureen Mead’s cell phone was found recording the inside of the women’s locker room at Towson.

USA Swimming says Pat Mead’s ban has nothing to do with that locker room incident, per our report from earlier this week.

Towson provided SwimSwam a statement this week saying it had received no complaints from current or former students about sexual misconduct that could have led to USA Swimming’s investigation and ban. The full statement:

Towson University takes all allegations of sexual misconduct very seriously. Any such allegations are thoroughly investigated by our fully accredited police department, university officials and other law enforcement agencies, as appropriate.  We became aware on June 7 of a media outlet reporting that “Ex-Towson University Head Coach Pat Mead was placed on the USA Swimming Banned List last Friday June 3rd” for “inappropriate sexual behavior toward an athlete by a coach between 2002-2008.”

To date, university officials have not received, either from a current or former student, a complaint that references a specific incident of sexual misconduct by Mr. Mead that may have been the subject matter of USA Swimming’s investigation.  The university is currently seeking further information to determine what additional actions are necessary.

Towson needs to apologize to all former and current TU swimmers for keeping Pat as long as they did. There were student complaints, I cannot say whether they were related to sexual misconduct, they were simply ignored because Pat kept winning.
