Towson rolls past Delaware on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. – Nathan Pursley won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events and Matt McKenney won the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events, leading the Towson University men’s swimming and diving team to a 177-119 victory over Delaware on Saturday afternoon at Burdick Pool.

Prior to the meet, the Tigers took time to recognize seniors Billy Pappas and Alex Cohen as they competed in the final home meet of their careers.

The Tigers moved to 10-1 this season, including 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association meets. It is the second time in men’s program history the team has earned 10 dual meet victories in a single season under Head Coach Pat Mead.

The Tigers finished the 2002-03 season with a 10-3 season under the long-time Towson coach.

“I give our guys a lot of credit for being able to race as well as they did today,” Mead said. “It’s very rewarding for Nate to swim like he did today and it’s good for the rest of the team to see hard work pay off.”

Pursley timed 57.70 in the 100-yard event and 2:05.33 in the 200 for his victories. McKenney timed 50.50 in his 100-yard performance and 1:51.87 in his 200 to claim the wins.

Cohen capped his senior day by winning both the one and three-meter diving events for the Tigers. He scored 287.18 points in the one meter event and 331.05 points in the three-meter diving competition to earn the win.

Towson’s final meet of the regular season is next Saturday at Penn State with Saint Bonaventure at 1 p.m.

TOWSON, Md. – Freshman Olivia Evans won the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, leading the Towson University women’s swimming and diving team to an emphastic 247.50-52.50 victory over Delaware on Saturdayafternoon on Senior Day at Burdick Pool.

Prior to the meet, the team took time to recognize seniors Hillary AtkinsonKaitlin BurkeMelanie Rowland,Courtney SepichCassie SornaKendall Towe and Shelby Witham for their contributions to the program.

The Tigers improved to 12-0 this season.

“Our women continue to impress,” Towson Head Coach Pat Mead said. “Our senior class is one of our deepest that we’ve had. Our seniors will be missed.”

Evans timed 56.66 to win the 100-yard event and 2:01.80 in the 200 butterfly to earn the win.

Burke swam well for Towson, winning the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle in her home finale.

Jenna Van Camp also won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events for Towson.

Towson’s final meet of the regular season is next Saturday at Penn State with Saint Bonaventure at 1 p.m.

 

Delaware Press release:

TOWSON, Md. – The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both fell to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponent Towson on Saturday afternoon at Burdick Pool in Delaware’s last dual meet of the 2013-14 campaign.

On the men’s side, the Tigers defeated the Hens, 177-119 while the Towson women thumped Delaware, 247.5-52.5.

The Blue Hen men had three student-athletes who tallied two first place finishes on the afternoon. Everett AlbertTomás Elder and Alex Hillsley all paced Delaware with one individual first place finish and the top finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay.

Albert earned the top finish in the 200 Freestyle (1:42.50), Elder placed first in the 50 Freestyle (21.73) and Hillsley completed the best finish in the 100 Freestyle (47.41). All three athletes, along with Sihan Liu, earned the top tally in the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:07.47).

Liu also took home a second place finish this afternoon in the 100 Freestyle, thanks to a time of 47.73.

Corey BeinhartBrian GreenPatrick McCann and Jorge Rios also tallied second place finishes for the Blue Hens.

Beinhart finished the 100 Breaststroke in 58.76 while Rios completed the 400 IM in 4:09.19. In the diving events, Green earned a second place finish in the 3-Meter (246.60) and McCann garnered a second place tally in the 1-Meter (259.13).

For the second consecutive meet, Morgan Whyteled the Delaware women. Whyte earned the top finish for the Blue Hen women at Towson as she notched a second place finish in the 50 Freestyle (24.04).

Kristina CongdonAnnie Nunes and Mary Kay Harris tallied third place finishes for the Hens.

Congdon placed third in the 3-Meter diving event (278.63) and the 1-Meter (266.85). Nunes completed the 200 Breaststroke in 2:25.25 for the third spot while Harris finished the 100 Butterfly in 58.30 for the bronze.

Delaware will take off the next month from competition before competing in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Feb. 26 – March 1 in College Park, Md.
