Smith Scratches 200 Back, Comerford/Flickinger 200 Free On Day 2 of US Nats

2019 PHILLIPS 66 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

A lot of big names have scratched out of events on day 2 of U.S. Nationals, including world 200 back champ Regan Smith and top 200 free seeds Mallory Comerford and Hali Flickinger.

Smith doesn’t have much left to prove in the 200 back, after putting up the two best performances in history of the sport at the World Championships and winning gold last week. Smith will instead put her focus on this morning’s 200 free, where she’s now a sneaky contender for the American 4×200 free relay next summer.

That 200 free has a couple big names bowing out. World champs team members Mallory Comerford and Hali Flickinger won’t swim. Flickinger is out of two events – she was the second seed (behind Smith) in the 200 back and the fourth seed in the 200 free.

6th seeded Kaersten Meitz is out of the 200 free as well – she scratched the meet with appendicitis.
