Rice Owls Pull in a Pair of Verbals from Shannon Jelley and Marta Cano

Shannon Jelley from Mason, Ohio and Marta Cano of Madrid, Spain have each given verbal commitments to Rice University for the 2018-19 season.

Jelley is a senior at Kings High School in Kings Mills, Ohio, and a member of the Countryside YMCA National Team. She took 8th in the 100 fly (55.87) and 7th in the 500 free (5:01.74) at the 2017 OHSAA Division I Swimming & Diving State Tournament.

Jelley is a YMCA national champion, having won the 200m fly (2:15.93) at this summer’s 2017 YMCA Long Course Nationals. She followed that performance with appearances in a number of finals: she was 5th in the 1500 free (17:29.03, PBx2.6), 6th in the 100 fly (1:03.09 in prelims, PBx.3), 17th in the 200 free (2:06.89, PBx3), and 20th in the 50 free (27.12, PBx2).

Marta Cano

Cano is from Madrid, Spain, and has represented her country on the international scene. She is primarily a mid-distance freestyler but shows good versatility in IM and butterfly. Named to the Spanish squad for the 5th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Singapore, Cano competed in the 100 free (27th in heats) and 200 free (14th in heats) individually, and on Spain’s 4×200 free relay (8th in finals).
