HOUSTON – The Rice swim and dive team delivered a commanding performance in its first home dual meet of the season, winning every swimming event and cruising past North Texas 217-80 on Friday.

Several Owls stood out in the sweep. Freshman Bella Zhang earned two individual wins, taking first in the 200 freestyle (1:53.17) and the 100 freestyle (51.14), while contributing to the winning 200 medley relay.

Siiri Einio also picked up two victories, finishing first in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.53) and the 200 breaststroke (2:20.72). Reese Cole added wins in the 200 butterfly (2:03.78) and 200 backstroke (2:04.63).

“We were very pleased with how the team competed today,” head coach Seth Huston said. “We’re on the back end of a training cycle, so today’s racing was as much a measure of where we are at this point in the season as it was about not having an excuse to underperform.”

The Owls opened strong with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay as Abigail King, Cole, Catherine Eland and Zhang touched the wall in 1:44.57.

Ava Portello led a sweep in the 1,000 freestyle (10:01.09), followed by Ava Hamblett and Renee Tan in second and third. Rice also claimed the top four finishes in the 100 backstroke, led by King (57.78), with Angelina HuangMia Fildissis and Gio Musiello rounding out the sweep.

Other event winners included Archibald in the 50 freestyle (23.88), Hamblett in the 500 freestyle (5:02.77) and Eland in the 100 butterfly (57.01).

The Owls closed the swimming portion of the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, as Zara Bolton, Zhang, Tan and Archibald finished in (3:29.78).

Rice carried its dominance into diving, where Antonina Harned won the 3-meter event with a score of 295.43. Morgan Robson took second (288.30), earning a zone qualifying score, and later placed third in the 1-meter (259.73), while Harned finished second in that event (297.45).

The Owls will compete at on Friday Tulane and LSU on Saturday next weekend.

HOUSTON – The UNT swim and dive team fell to defending American Conference champion Rice on the road on Saturday.

UNT, which defeated Rice in Denton last season before the Owls went on to win the conference championship, fell 217-80.

The Mean Green got one event win from junior diver Sydney Guidara, who won the 1-meter springboard with a 297.45, while sophomore Amelia Sharp finished fourth with a 259.73. In the 3-meter springboard, Guidara finished third with a 274.80, and sophomore Valeria Hernandez Meza finished fourth with a 259.65 and also had a personal best in the 1-meter event. Junior Ashley Van Milligan had a personal best in the 3-meter.

“Today we had multiple season bests, a personal best (by Hernandez Meza) and a great win on 1-meter for Sydney,” said associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O’Callaghan. “I’m proud of the divers. It’s always a challenge to dive outside when you’re not used to it, but they took the challenge head on and showed a lot of improvement as we near closer to our midseason invites. We’re looking forward to a full week of practice to continue to build on our wins and to get ready for UT.”

In the pool, the Mean Green had strong performances from Maria Jose Sanchez Castro and Mikaela Goelst in the 100 breaststroke, as they finished third and fourth, respectively, in 1:04.87 and 1:04.89. Another strong showing came from sophomore Jette Schindler, who finished second in 2:05.65, in the 200 butterfly.

UNT’s divers will be back in action on Nov. 13-15 at the Texas Diving Invitational in Austin, while the swimmers (along with diving) will be back in action at the SMU Invitational on Nov. 20-22.
