After an initial DQ call following the 2nd semifinal race in the men’s 100 breast, reigning Olympic Champion Nicolò Martinenghi will ultimately be racing in the finals of the 100 breast after an overturned ruling.
The DQ was first ruled to have been on his finishing kick, where Martinenghi was called for a dolphin kick into the wall.
The initial call would have bumped Martinenghi, who finished in the second fastest semifinal time in 58.62, out of tomorrow’s championship final. Following the initial decision, Danil Semianinov, swimming as a Neutral Athlete, would have earned the finals spot in 8th after finishing in 59.39.
Following the reinstatement of Martinenghi in the final, Seminaninov will also swim in the Championship final, making this a nine-lane final. While it is an unusual circumstance, it has happened before.
At the 2023 European Short Course Championships, Miroslav Knedla was disqualified in the semifinals after finishing as the 5th fastest performer for the championship finals. After his reinstatement in the final, the field expanded to nine lanes. Knedla finished 8th overall the following day.
Top 9 100 Breast Qualifiers:
- Qin Haiyang (CHN) – 58.24
- Nicolo Martinenghi (ITA) – 58.62
- Ludovico Viberti (ITA) – 58.89
- Lucas Matzerath (GER) – 58.93
- Josh Matheny (USA) – 59.15
- Caspar Corbeau (NED) – 59.17
- Denis Petrashov (KGZ) – 59.20
- Kirill Prigoda (NAB) – 59.36
- Danil Semianinov (NAB) – 59.39
Martineghi will swim in lane five in the final, side-by-side with Qin Haiyang, who topped all semifinal swims in 58.24, setting up a duel between the 2023 World Champion and the reigning Olympic Champion.

I’m not sure about now, but definitely a double dolphin kick in the Olympic semi-final.
Looked a DQ to me but breaststroke is so often objective and that’s exactly why people try their luck. Seen him do it before and he’ll do it again. It’s something I’ve noted with a few Italian breaststrokers now, nothing as egregious as the poop Scozzoli used to pull, but it’s a trend and very disappointing to see.
Who does he has vouching for him? His DQ for the same thing at Sette Colli was also overturned
Clearly a dolphin kick into the wall.
I remember reading how the US team brought its own water, food, AC, etc at the last Olympics. What happened this time in Phuket, or was it a lack of team discipline?
What about the fact that he kept continually moving back on the blocks?
Fairweather was DQ’d for less movement in 400 free
Moving backwards is legal.
People downvoting the rules lol
This was my understanding, which is how I assumed the overturn happened.
He fly kicks constantly, so this overturn is ridiculous.
He didn’t stay still at all. That’s not legal.
Sort of true.
As he was never stationary the official probably shouldn’t have started the race. But movement backwards hasn’t ever been considered ‘initiating a start’.
