Redlands Men’s Water Polo holds off Johns Hopkins 14-12 at Gary Troyer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men’s Water Polo team came away with a split Saturday during the Gary Troyer Tournament as they held off Johns Hopkins University 14-12.

The Maroon and Grey who came into the weekend ranked No. 7 in the ACWPC Division III polls improves to 3-14, 0-3 SCIAC.

Game 1 (Johns Hopkins – W, 14-12)

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start in the opening quarter outscoring the Blue Jays 4-0 behind goals from Spencer Clinton (Cypress, CA)Tore Cole (Malibu, CA)Drake Moody (Camarillo, CA), and Andrew Sorensen (Long Beach, CA).  Johns Hopkins though was able to bounce back in the second outscoring UR 6-2 that tied the game up heading into the break.

In the 3rd Quarter the Bulldog defense stood strong as they shut out the Blue Jays for the second time.  This allowed Sorensen, Max Wagener (Piedmont, CA), Cole, and Austin Galanski (Bakersfield, CA) to extend the lead to 10-6.

It was a high scoring 4th Quarter with a combined 10 goals being scored.  Cole kept it a four-goal game at the 5:21 mark, Galanski then capitalized on a power play on Redlands next possession and Clinton secured the win with back-to-back tallies in the final two minutes.

Redlands finished with 29 shots, shot .483, and was 2-for-9 on power plays.  Jason Gates (San Jose, CA) was again called upon to play between the posts.  He played all 32:00 minutes collecting nine saves and a steal.

Galanski finished the game with four goals, Cole and Clinton each added three and Sorensen put up a pair of strikes.

Game 2 (No. 7 Long Beach State – L, 18-2)

Redlands ran into a tough match-up with No. 7 Long Beach State in the second game of the Gary Troyer.  They managed only 14 shots for the game, shooting .143 and going 1-for-13 on power plays.

They put two goals up both coming in the middle quarters from Cole and Michael Driscoll (Escondido, CA) and Gates and Brandon Khalil (Bakersfield, CA) combined for nine saves between the posts.

Redlands returns to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play next Wednesday, October 6 when they host the University of La Verne beginning at 7:00pm.
