The Raleigh Charter boys and girls won respective team titles at the 2018 NCSHAA 1A/2A Championships over the weekend.

Sydney Willis was the star for the Raleigh Charter girls. The senior won two individual events, and helped their relays place very high at state. Willis went 1:49.94 to win the 200 free, the only competitor under 1:50, and she returned in the 500 free to take the title with a 4:58.27. She was on both free relays, as Raleigh Charter touched 2nd in the 200 relay and 4th in the 400 relay, and they also finished 3rd in the 200 medley relay without Willis.

There were three other double winners on the girls’ side. Emme Nelson‘s double was perhaps the most impressive, as she set new 1A/2A records in both of her races. The Community School of Davidson sophomore went 2:02.01 in the 200 IM and 1:02.28 in the 100 breast, breaking records that she had set in prelims. Salisbury’s Kathryn Morrison took the 100 fly (55.54) and 100 back (55.42), while Pine Lake Prep’s Alyssa Accordino won the 50 free (23.50) and 100 free (51.18).

Thomas Hamlet won twice on the boys’ side for Bishop McGuinness. The junior went 1:42.00 to win the 200 free by over two seconds, and he returned to go 51.06 to take the 100 fly ahead of Lincoln Charter’s Zach Whipple (51.48). Whipple also touched 2nd in the 200 IM (1:53.22) behind Salisbury’s Ethan Knorr (1:52.74).

Knorr was the 500 free runner-up behind Newton-Conover’s Ross Dant. Dant won twice, taking the 500 free (4:26.97), and the 100 back (49.35). He broke Knorr’s 500 free 1A/2A record (4:33.98) from 2017 by seven seconds, and came within two seconds of Olympian Charlie Houchin’s North Carolina overall HS record. Dant’s 100 back was also a 1A/2A record.

Raleigh Charter won by only 2.5 points on the boys’ side and 6.5 points on the girls’ side.
