Upon the release of the pre-selection psych sheets for the 2026 Men’s NCAA Championships on Tuesday, SwimSwam has run the numbers and projected where the cutline will fall for the finale of the 2025-26 college campaign.

Note: Pre-cut psych sheets are not final. The final selections are usually released on Wednesday afternoon. Any changes that happen before that release will change the math. Any change after the release of the post-cut psych sheets—such as a swimmer scratching the meet, which often happens—will pull in the next alternate regardless of event

Numbers and Projections courtesy of Andrew Mering.

Projecting the cutline is not as straightforward as it has been in the past this year due to the introduction of the automatic qualifier system through the conference championships.

The change means there’s no clear cutline due to an uneven number of automatic qualifiers in each event. For example, the 25th-ranked swimmers in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 IM will all qualify for NCAAs, but the 22nd seed in the 50 free won’t, due to there being eight men earning automatic invites in the 50.

This year’s cutline falls two spots into Line 29, which is the 24th-seeded swimmer in the men’s 200 back, Northwestern’s David Gerchik.

As we did for the women’s projection, below you can find the last invited swimmer in each event. Note that this isn’t entirely accurate for what the invite time is in each event, as many swimmers have higher seeds in other events. In the 50 freestyle, for example, Alabama’s Sean Niewold was the last new invite as the 14th seed, but the swimmers seeded 15th-21st all have higher seeds in other individual events.

Niewold notably qualified in the 50 free at the Indiana Last Chance Meet on Saturday, clocking 18.76 just one day after a breakthrough 21.66 swim in the long course pool.

Event Swimmer School Time Seed

200 IM Jordan Tiffany ASU 1:42.69 25
400 IM Frederick Klein Cal 3:41.30 23

*Two swimmers tied for 20th in the 100 back at 44.79, and three tied at 1:52.10 for 21st in the 200 breast.

The new qualifying procedure, in its simplest terms:

  • Step 1: Divers go in (35 men, 41 women)
  • Step 2: All individual swimmers who won a conference championship AND hit the Qualifying Standard in that event get the auto-bid.
  • Step 3: (Steps 3 & 4 are similar to years past) Swimmers are added one at a time in each event, keeping the number of qualifiers in each event the same* until the entry cap is reached (235 swimmers for men, 281 swimmers for women).
  • Step 4: When the entry cap is reached, you wind up with a ‘final row’ in each event. For women, that’s usually around #40, for men, that’s usually around #30 in each event. Swimmers already qualified in step two are now guaranteed their spot, while the rest are ranked by their time as a percentage of the qualifying standard, with the fastest times added one at a time until the cap is met.

The first alternate for the meet projects to be Texas freshman Alexey Glivinskiy, who is the 26th seed in the 200 free.

Projected Invites

The new entry procedure sees automatic qualifiers added to the meet first, regardless of seed. That means that when projecting the cutline, each swimmer who earned an AQ was added first as the “top seed,” even if they were not the fastest swimmer in their event. Because of this, the seed column numbers are off from the actual listed seeds in the pre-selection psych sheets.

INVITES BY SCHOOL

Teams can bring a maximum of 18 roster spots to the NCAA Championships, with each swimmer counting as one roster member and divers counting as half. Unlike the women’s meet, where Virginia qualified 18 swimmers, the men’s team with the most qualifiers in the pool is Indiana, with 16, followed by Texas and Cal with 13.

Last year, Cal originally had 19 swimmers qualify for the meet (meaning they would have to scratch at least one), while Texas had 18.

Looks like Mr. Mering goofed on two: Jack Boysen and Zack Redding did not auto-qualify.
Go Nagaoka and Alex Painter in.

Those were actually marked as auto-qualifiers on the pre-cut sheets. You’ll recall that was an issue with the women’s stuff too.

I suppose we could have reviewed every w marked on the sheets…but that felt like a lot of work for a projection. NCAA should be able to get this stuff right. But then again, that’s why they put out the pre-cut sheet in the first place, so everyone can check for errors.

I had to tally the “old guys” qualifying this year, simply because we typically see class, not age.

Per my tally:
age 23: 21 (6 are American)
age 24: 8 (2 are American: Luca and Jordan Tiffany)
age 25: 1 (0 American)
age 26: 1 (0 American)

And some aren’t even 5th years or Seniors 🙂

I started my second job out of college by 24 and was on my third by age 26….

I still think that Texas will win, but the fact that all these guys were expected to be swimming individual events gives me pause:

David Johnston
Glivinsky
Fry
Branon
Enyeart
Bailey
Masiuk

And that’s not even counting Gould, who (based on his improvement curve) was always likely to be right around the bubble for individual swims. And Fente-Damers and Peck only squeaked in by a couple tenths each.

Lots of firepower though, with Rex, Nate, Will, Hubi, Baylor, Cooper Lucas, McKean, Scholtz, Camden Taylor. And Wimberly and Hammer both qualified early in the year and might have more in the tank too.

Karol Ostrowski still swimming is wild. I’m 25, this is my third year out of college. He’s a year older than me and still swimming collegiately.

New frontiers in swimflation:

  • 19.00 doesn’t qualify
  • 42.00 doesn’t qualify (techncially that happened last year)
  • 45.00 doesn’t qualify (fly OR back)
  • 1:40.00 doesn’t qualify (back)

The 1650 actually got a couple seconds slower. Last year a 14:48 didn’t qualify, this year its 14:52.

And 19.00 and 42.00 wouldn’t have qualified in the old system either.

19.00 did qualify last year

Right but it wouldn’t have qualified this year using last year’s methodology.

Most likely there will be some 18.9s and 41.8s that don’t qualify, but a 19.4 and 42.4 will auto-qualify.

Congratulations to the NCAA for creating a championship meet so screwed up that even the swim nerds won’t watch.

I find no B finals and the new format brings a lot hype out of the meet. NCAA’s is so fun, because you need to “win” prelims in terms up/downs, you need “win” finals by moving up/defending your seeds / beating the team you’re chasing. And now half of that is gone.

Automatic qualifiers should be invited in addition to the standard entry limit or have to be faster than the previous year’s cutline to qualify for an event. There are many swimmers nationally ranked in the top 25 staying home with these new guidelines. This is wrong! Plus swimmers in the 20-25 ranked range are now needing to swim last chance meets due to being on the projected bubble. They should feel safely in based on the body of work. This may also alter their performance at NCAAs.

Expanding the field is not a practical option.

There are 2 swimmers ranked in the top 25 nationally not qualifying in individual events. Go Nagako and Rian Graham. Graham won’t be staying home as he will likely go to swim on Louisville relays.

This is inaccurate. Garret Gould and Ethan Harrington are also ranked top 25.

You’re right – sorry I was looking at folks on the alternates list but neglected that there are events without swimmers on the alternate list. I checked the other events not on the alternates list (backstrokes, 100 breast), and looks like they’re clear. So it’s 4 guys who didn’t get individual entries, and 3 of them will go in relays.

Why is expanding not practical? Aren’t we just talking about one more heat in prelims?

It’s been iterated by Braden and others a couple of times in comment sections, but basically when the # of qualifiers was set, the total number of teams/collegiate swimmers was larger. Coaches are afraid to ask the NCAA to revisit for fear of the NCAA actually shrinking the number of qualifiers

Not sure I understand the rational there. Is there an increased cost to the NCAA to have more swimmers? I get that individual schools will have increased costs, but wouldn’t that only impact the AQ schools that wouldn’t have otherwise qualified as compared to prior years? By last year’s standard the normal spend per school should be comparable. However, a school like Wyoming that had no qualifiers last year will see increased costs under the new system.
