University of Alabama freshman Sean Niewold has been on an absolute tear throughout the first five sessions of the 2026 Pro Swim Series stop in Westmont, and that continued into Friday afternoon as the Dutchman raced the 50 freestyle in a time trial.
The 23-year-old blasted his way to a time of 21.66, shattering his personal best of 21.99, set nearly two years ago at the Eindhoven Qualification Meet in April 2024.

The swim ranks Niewold 5th in the world this season, and also makes him the second-fastest Dutchman in history.

Niewold has been having an excellent freshman season at Alabama, recently placing 7th in the 100 fly (45.13), 9th in the 50 free (18.94) and 12th in the 100 free (42.02) at last month’s SEC Championships.

Who is bro?
Dutch people are so freaking tall.
Didn’t he have a schmelting accident?
I don’t get it. They’re just putting on time trials for guys on request now?
Yeah of course, why not?
Pretty sure you have to pay for one?
Is 23yo freshman normal for international students?
I wouldn’t say it’s normal, but it’s not unheard of either.
Why is this allowed? Do we know?
Some countries have civil service requirements. I worked with a guy from Sweden who was a NATO peacekeeper for a couple years – he said it was a requirement. He also liked to go out partying/clubbing a lot, so he could have been making it all up. My point is it’s pretty common for first year students from outside the US to be 20+ due to various reasons like civil service or apprenticeships.
Great swims!
I have to ask / point out that as of now I feel like he is not making NCAAs individually?
Is he going to last chance tomorrow?
18.87 is 22nd with 9 AQs behind making him line 31 afaik.
He has scratched tonight’s final, maybe he is leaving the meet to head to a last chance meet.
In fact, on meet mobile, Niewold’s name is entered in the IU last chance meet, presumably he is swimming there tomorrow.
