Pool Records Fall As Bryant Women, Binghamton Men Claim Victories In Split Dual

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — The Bryant University women’s swimming and diving team dominated its home opener against Binghamton this weekend, breaking six pool records in the process.

Coach Billy’s Comments on the Win:

“Overall, a great performance,” Coach Billy said.

“Our women swam and dove great the past two days, and it showed on the record board, breaking seven pool records. Looking forward to keeping the momentum going for next week as our women go against Stony Brook and our men go against another America East team; NJIT.”

The Bulldogs opened the meet Saturday morning, with a record-breaking swim in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team in lane three, Clara SteenAmanda Witkus, Ruby Tonelli, and Marcella Figueroa, set a new pool record with a time of 1:43.90.

Amanda Witkus had a standout day, setting two pool records of her own in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.43) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.77).

Ruby Tonelli continued Bryant’s surge with a pool record in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 54.23, while Katherine Bailey added another in the 500-yard freestyle with a winning time of 4:59.20.

The Bulldogs capped their historic meet by breaking two relay records, the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay in lane three, both setting new pool records.

Bryant also swept both diving events, led by Megan Beasley, who took first in the one-meter (264.23) and three-meter (245.70) dives.

The Bulldogs secured the overall women’s victory, outpacing Binghamton 212–141 in team scoring.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Evan Peters won four individual events and anchored the first-place 400 free relay team, highlighting Binghamton’s dual meet at Bryant. The Bearcat men recorded a 184-169 triumph while the Bulldog women won 212-141. The two-day meet concluded on Saturday.

Peters captured the men’s 200 free (1:38.97), 500 free (4:36.96), 1,000 free (9:34.96) as well as the 400 IM (4:00.11). Three of his victories (200 free, 500 free and 400 IM) were pool records. The other members of that first-place 400 free relay team, which clocked a time of 3:02.22, included sophomores Cullin Cole and William Deutmeyer and senior Liam Preston.

The Bearcat men posted three-other individual winners. Freshman Isaih Francis touched first in the 100 back (49.89), sophomore Amir Sadykov took top honors in the 200 breast (2:04.35) while freshman Samual Pikofsky-Christiansen was triumphant in the one-meter diving competition (281.85).

Francis led off both the first-place 200-  and 400 medley relay teams, whose winning times were 1:31.33 and 3:21.74 respectively. Sophomore Tyler Schultz and senior Patrick Lang also swam on both of those relays. Preston, meanwhile, anchored the 400 medley relay while Cole was the final swimmer on the 200 free relay.  

On the women’s side, the Bearcats posted three double-event winners. Sophomore Eva Smith swept the 100 back (56.77) and 200 back (2:04.54), freshman Julia Iwanow captured the 100 breast (1:03.27) and 200 breast (2:15.89) while senior Maria Pignatelli was first in the 50 free (23.74) and 100 free (51.34).

Pignatelli also led off the first-place 400 free relay team. Other members of that squad were junior Juliette Phillips, sophomore Leonor Coelho and freshman Lauren Maierle.

“We competed well this weekend,” head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. “We had lots of season-best times and great races. I am very proud of how both our teams did all weekend.”

Up next for Binghamton is the Bucknell Invitational next Saturday at noon.
