PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Brown men’s swimming & diving team was defeated by Penn, 157-143, on Saturday at Sheerr Pool. Senior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) highlighted the day for the Bears with two individual victories (100 backstroke and 100 freestyle).

“Overall we swam well, but lost too many close touches that ended up being the difference in the meet,” said head coach Kevin Norman. “When you’re on the road competing against a team like Penn, you can’t afford to lose those close races. We’ll learn from this, recharge, and get ready for our home opener next weekend against UConn.”

The Bears opened the day by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:29.73, with Sung, freshman Vincent Huang (League City, Texas), sophomore I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) and senior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) swimming to the time.

Junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) recorded the first individual victory of the meet, claiming the top spot in the 200 freestyle (1:39.97). He later posted a third-place finish in the 500 free (4:38.14).

Sung followed with a first-place showing in the 100 backstroke (49.77) while senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) took third (50.80). Sullivan came back later to finish second in the 200 of the event, with a time of 1:50.60.

The Bears went 2-3 in the 100 breaststroke with Huang finishing second (56.72) and sophomore Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) coming in third (57.23). Hayes also finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:03.27).

Qiao won the 200 butterfly, touching in at 1:50.50, while also leading the Bears in the 100 of the event, finishing second (49:07), and just beating out Sung (49.08, third.

Brown had a strong showing in the 100 freestyle, taking the top three spots with Sung leading the group with a time of 45:11. He was followed by Cline (45.29) and Smilenov (45.93). Cline was the Bears’ top finisher in the 50 free, coming in second at 20.59.

Sophomore Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) led the team on the boards, coming in second on the 1M (289.42) and third in the 3M (310.28).

Junior Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) won the 200 IM for the second consecutive meet, doing so with a time of 1:52.55 while Hayes finished third (1:52.57).

Brown closed the afternoon with a win in the 400 freestyle in 3:01.20 with Cline, Lincoln, Sullivan and Smilenov contributing to the finish.

The Bears next host their first meet of the season, welcoming UConn to the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday, Nov. 23 at noon.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Brown women’s swimming & diving team defeated Penn, 171.5-128.5 on Saturday at Sheerr Pool. The Bears finished 1-2-3 in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay to highlight some of the action.

“Penn can be a very tough team so this was a road win that just came down to being willing to race again and again,” said head coach Kate Kovenock. “Diving continues to impress. Coach Miller is in a really productive spot with our women. On the swimming side, I was especially happy with how our women managed their energy, both physically and emotionally. And I have to give props to our 400 freestyle relays. Those twelve swimmers took it upon themselves to make a statement with a full team effort to cap off the afternoon.”

The Bears opened with a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:44.83) from junior Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.), freshman Sasha Liu (Piedmont, Calif.), freshman Sage Matsushima (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and senior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.).

Brown took the top three spots in the 200 freestyle with freshman Audrey Orange (New York City, N.Y.) leading the team in 1:51.99. Cross followed in second (1:53.14), just out-touching senior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) in third (1:54.18).

Matsushima and senior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) went 2-3 in the 100 backstroke with times of 57.30 and 57.80, respectively. Welch later came back to take second in the 200 of the event, finishing in 2:02.40.

Brown also went 2-3 in the 100 breastroke, with sophomore Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.) claiming second (1:06.26) and Liu finishing third (1:06.76). Lukawski also came in second in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.57) while sophomore Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) placed third (2:25.12).

Another 1-2-3 finish was turned in by Brown in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Seaman nabbed the top spot in the 50 free (23:47) while sophomore Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass.) (23.99, second) and junior Tory Center (Madison, Wis.) (24.02) followed. Seaman also won the 100 in 51.11 with Cross coming in second (51.71) and junior Claudia Wong (Los Angeles, Calif.) in third (53.15).

Orange won her second event of the day, the 500 freestyle, in 4:59.28 as Gilchrist came in third (5:05.11).

Freshman Nell Chidley (Mystic, Conn.) placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:04.50) and third in the 100 butterfly (56.74).

Junior Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) led the Bears on the 1M boards, posting a score of 269.09 for first place while senior Emily Zitkovsky (Lexington, Mass.) took third (238.57). Sophomore Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) claimed the top spot in the 3M with a mark of 285.00 and Feord came in third (268.65).

In the final individual event, Takabayashi won the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.83 and Liu came in second in 2:07.13.

Brown finished the meet with a statement, going 1-2-3 in the 400 freestyle relay. A quartet of Seaman, Center, Orange and Cross recorded the victory in 3:26.63. Wong, Gilchrist, Matsushima and Wei placed second (3:31.08) while freshman Elise Kreutzer (Portland, Ore.), Welch, Chidley and sophomore Maija Ninness (Santa Barbara, Calif.) finished third (3.33.79).

The Bears next host their first meet of the season, welcoming UConn to the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday, Nov. 23 at noon.

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania swimming and diving programs split its dual meet with Brown today as the men edged the Bears for a narrow, 157-143 victory while the women were dealt a 171.5-128.5 defeat.

The Quakers won 16 events on the afternoon, with the men winning nine events and the women winning seven. The men’s team won both of its duals this weekend to move to 2-1 while the women dropped to 0-3 in the final dual of the first half of the season.

Recapping the Women
The Quakers had a strong showing in the pool today with first-place finishes in seven events. Reigning Ivy League champion Catherine Buroker won the 1,000 free (10:18.21) while Grace Giddings (10:24.33) and Kaitlin Stearns (10:26.88) finished second and third, respectively.

Hannah Kannan picked up Penn’s second victory of the day, winning the 100 back after clocking in at 55.89. Kannan has now won the 100 back in two of Penn’s three meet’s this season. The sophomore took her second win of the afternoon, touching first in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.02. Kannan rounded out a stellar meet with a third victory, touching first in the 100 fly with a time of 55.94.

Serena Xue sprinted to a victory in the 100 breast, beating Brown’s Audrey Lukawski by .01 seconds with a time of 1:06.25. She took another first-place finish later in the meet with a victory in the 200 breast (2:20.57). Anna Feng kept things going for the Quakers with her first collegiate victory. The freshman raced to a close victory in the 200 fly, clocking in at 2:04.01.

Recapping the Men
As has been the case throughout the season, the Quakers got off to a hot start with a dominating performance in a distance event. CJ Hinckley headlined a 1-2-3 finish in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:31.41. Matt Haigh (9:32.62), and Will Thomas (9:33.37) closely followed.

Boris Yang kept the Quakers on track with a win in the 100 breast, finishing with a season-best time of 56.42. Yang later took first in the 200 breast (2:02.70) with Jason Schreiber hot on his tail in second (2:02.96).

Sean Lee rounded out the first half of the meet, sprinting to a blazing-fast finish in the 50 free (20.46). Lee later finished first in the 100 fly with a time of 48.82.

The Quakers continued on the front foot with a crucial clean sweep in the diving events. Trevor Nelson won the 1-meter—his first collegiate diving victory—with a final score of 290.02.

John Michael Diveris followed with a win in the 3-meter dive with a score of 316.43 score. He has now won the 3-meter in each of Penn’s three meets this season. Freshman Trevor Nelson finished second after posting a score of 310.80.

Freshman Mark McCrary got in on the action with his first collegiate victory in the 200 back (1:49.33).

The Quakers closed things out with another victory in a distance event. Freshman Matt Bonnell won the 500 free (4:29.53) while William Kamps finished second (4:32.96).

Penn looks ahead to its first tri-meet of the season as the Quakers head to Princeton to take on the Tigers and Cornell on Saturday, Nov. 23 at noon.
