The Italians dominated the first night of competition at the Mediterranean Games in Turkey. Out of the 24 medals available the Italians collected 10 (5 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze). Slovenia is second in the medals standings having collected a gold and silver medal on the evening while Greece has the next best total medal count of four (2 silver and 2 bronze).
Italian Fabio Scozzoli won the men’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:00.86, well off his season’s best of 59.77, which is currently the second fastest time done in the world this year. He was followed by fellow countryman Andrea Toniato who finished second in a time of 1:01.23 while Panagiotis Samilidis of Greece finished third in a time of 1:01.71.
Tunisian Olympic Champion Oussama Mellouli collected silver in both the 400 freestyle and 200 IM. Velimir Stjepanovic of Serbia won the 400 freestyle in a time of 3:48.33. Mellouli made a late push, but came up just short finishing second in a time of 3:48.67 followed by Simon Guerin of France who finished third in a time of 3:52.68.
Both Stjepanovic and Mellouli were just outside of the top ten times in the world, while it was a season’s best for Mellouli who has only swam the event once this year recording a time of 4:04.04 at the Charlotte Grand Prix.
Italian Federico Turrini won the 200 IM in a time of 1:59.35 well off his season’s best of 1:58.06. Mellouli was second posting a time of 2:00.09 followeed by Andreas Vazaios of Greece who finished third in a time of 2:00.74.
Croatian Sanja Jovanovic broke the only games record of the evening in the women’s 50 backstroke. Jovanovic won the event in a time of 28.48 which betters the record of 28.60 which was set by Italian Elena Gemo in 2009. Gemo finished sixth in this year’s competition posting a time of 29.16.
