Niagara Soars To Senior Day Sweep of Canisius

Niagara University, N.Y. – Both the Niagara men’s and women’s teams started hot and never let up, combining to win 27 of 28 events on the day against Canisius. The men claimed Gold in every race, with the women only dropping the 100 Fly. 21 events saw Niagara take the top 2 spots in the race at the Oxy Aquatic Center in Niagara University, N.Y.

The Medley Relays set the tone, winning big early. Starting off the individual events, senior Avery King showed off her endurance to win the 1000 by thirty seconds. Sophomore Ola Bodyl swam to a second-place touch with a personal best time just over eleven minutes.

On the Men’s side, Jordan Grab led from start to finish as well. Teammate Logan Osterwise followed just behind for his second-place finish.

Claire Gorton led the way in the 200 Free, one of 9 events where Niagara finished in the top 3 spots (Carl second, A. Bodyl third).

Distance specialist James Coyne showed off his sprint speed by winning the men’s 200 free, and the 100 free. The 100 back saw two new faces (Jackson and Levine) win the event for the first time this year.

The 200 fly saw commanding wins from Shani Fridman and Ethan Hunter with the latter throwing down a personal best time. Holden Brock would eventually win the 200 IM but prior he jumped down to sprint his way to a 50 free victory.

After the first break, the Purple Eagles would only extend their lead. Two seniors grabbed wins in the 200 Back in Ania Bodyl and Nelson Maier. Senior Jake Lauzonis would join in on the fun with his victory in the 200 Breast. The men made it three senior wins in the span of three events, after RJ Helt won the 500 Free from Lane 1. The last individual race saw 4 IM specialist Marty Divis win the 200 version of the race with a best of 2:08.89.

3 Pool Records fell on the day as well. The first to fall was the 200 Breast where Alaina Pitton posted a season best time of 2:15.10. In the very next event, classmate Natalie Killion broke the standard in the 500 free in 4:56.79. The last event of the day was where the final Pool Record was broken. The 200 Free Relay squad of Claire GortonMegan JacksonAlaina Pitton, and Natalie Killion smashed the previous mark by over a second and a half. The total time of 1:33.65 is also a conference-leading time on the year.

The Canisius swimming and diving teams were swept by Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara in a dual meet Saturday at the Oxy Aquatic Center in Lewiston, N.Y.

The Golden Griffin women fell to the Purple Eagles by a score of 205-57 while the Canisius men suffered a 210-52 setback to Niagara.

The Canisius women were led by sophomore Daphne Mead, who captured first place in the women’s 100 butterfly with a time of 59.04. Mead also contributed to a second-place finish in the women’s 200 medley relay, teaming up with juniors Cassandra Ercoli, Leyna Swanson and Evie Leighton to post a time of 1:49.66.

Leighton also claimed second place in the women’s 100 free, touching the wall in 53.96. The women’s 200 free relay, featuring Ercoli, Leighton and Mead along with senior Hannah Brainard, capped the event with a second-place finish of 1:39.74.

In the men’s meet, junior Elliot Somers took second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.98. Junior Luke Critchlow claimed third in the men’s 1000 free (10:09.87), sophomore Cameron Upchurch placed third in the 50 free (22.08), freshman Peyton Gilliland finished third in the 100 fly (52.29) and senior Sam Vidal turned in a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 (58.91) and 200 (2:11.52) breast.

Canisius closes out the regular season Jan. 24 with a dual meet at in-state foe Le Moyne. Start time for the meet between the Griffs and Dolphins is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Rev. Vincent B. Ryan, S.J. Pool in Syracuse.
