New Mexico Adds Katelyne Herrington to Staff

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico swimming and diving coach Kunio Kono completed his staff this week with the hiring of Katelyne Herrington as Director of Operations. Herrington comes to UNM from UNLV, where she was a volunteer assistant coach after twice being named an Honorable Mention All-American in the 100 fly.

“I’m very excited to add Katelyne and for the future of our team,” Kono said. “She is a special person, athlete and coach. Not only is she one of the top swimmers in the country, but she also has an amazing knowledge of our sport. She will bring so much energy and enthusiasm to our team, and she will help our team achieve a lot this year.”

Originally from Stockton, California, Herrington holds the Mountain West record for the 100 fly, posting a time of 51.48 at the MW Championships in February 2014. In 2013 she also won the 100 fly and the 400 free relay at the MW Championships. An excellent student as well as a great swimmer, Herrington also earned Academic All-Conference honors as a Rebel.

She joins a staff that also features Julie Weddle, who coached the divers at UNLV while Herrington was there, and recently hired Jake Tapp, who was a 13-time All-American swimmer at the University of Arizona.

“With Julie, Jake and Katelyne, I feel like I have the best staff of assistants,” Kono said, “and I’m looking forward to having a great season.”

The Lobos begin their season with an intrasquad meet on Sept. 26, and then travel to Colorado for meets at Colorado State, Air Force and Denver Oct. 8-10.
